The place, not our usual drink.

Spent a very pleasant weekend there at anchor, excellent shelter from anything from the N or NW, good holding in a sandy bottom and very friendly locals. I was the only visiting boat, last time I stayed there, there was only one other boat at anchor so it's a bit of a novelty.

The sea was crystal clear, flat calm and the views of Beer Head and the cliffs are superb. The locals go out of their way to be friendly and helpful and there are several good pubs in the village.

What a pleasant change to have the whole bay to myself, the only early morning disturbance was the launching of the boats down the shingle beach. They even apologised to me for making a noise launching! Then there's also Jimmy Green Marine just up the hill. And what a view the allotments have on the edge of the cliffs.

Lyme Regis is only a few miles away, again a place which is largely ignored by visiting boats, and the other way there's Branscombe, well worth a few hours visit on a settled day. In fact the whole coastline between West Bay and Exmouth is superb, a recently designated world heritage site. What I really most enjoy is the solitude, most days between Beer and Exmouth and back we rarely see another boat after leaving Exmouth, the vhf stays mostly silent apart from the weather broadcasts and when you do see another boat there's almost always a friendly wave.

Suspect it's not like this on the Solent! Give me Lyme Bay any day. Just take my word for it, please don't all visit and spoil my peace and quiet ;-))

Got a mate who lives there and has two art galleries and a restaurant in the place. I've just done his latest exhibition catalogue which, strangely, contains a painting of the Allotments, Beer. See it Let's Twist Again

It\'s a small world!

They must have some of the best views of any allotments in the country, and surprisingly there seemed to be some not being used! And at the side of them there's Beer Sailing Club which seems to be a large hut, must pay a visit next time!

Was the setting for that awful programme Harbour Lights. I quite like it but would suggest if you are going by boat that Lyme Regis would be a better bet, especially with the tides next weekend as getting into the harbour at WB may be a problem unless you arrive early or later in the day. Lyme has visitors buoys if you can't get into the harbour.

Let me know if you'll be around as I will most likely be diving somewhere in the area.

As a chold - our family used to caravan at Beer .... afarm used to provide a field at the top of the cliffs for about 10 vans.
Spent many happy days there. The local Mackerel boats used to take us kids out to catch the days mackerel for our supper !!! I bet they don't do it now - probably too many Liability clauses and risks now !! But yes fantastic area. Never did it on a boat - but who-knows - I may be boat #2 with you one day....

Tried to catch mackerel for my supper on Sunday and not a single bight! Very galling when sat in the pub to see kids wander up the road with carrier bags bulging with mackerel. So yes they do still have plenty of tripping boats still as well as self drive hire boats.

And the caravan site at the top of the cliffs is now somewhat larger than in your days................... See you there one day.

I last over-nighted there five years ago. The club had laid a couple of summer moorings for visitors. The shelter is good from W round to NE, reasonable from SW, but its very exposed to the S and SE when it becomes a really dangerous lee shore. As you say, nice village and very friendly locals. From the thead we had about Beer HERE a couple of years ago, I thought you were a regular.

those days it was the local fishing boats would take you out ....
camp-iste was a plain fiekd and water tap at the top of the cliff just before the pathway down. No mod-cons, milk from farm-house direct from their cows etc.

Taking a club meet of about 6 boats to Weymouth on Sat, and around Portland Bill if conditions ok. Had a suggestion that a run down to West Bay might be nice. Assorted abilities and experience, so will make decision on day.

Will probably be off Portland at about 15:00 if conditions are such that peeps decide that they want to go further and not head straight into Weymouth, and see if a run down to WB ok, then head back to Weymouth for the evening.

Never been into WB, though been past it, so any advice most welcome.

Brendon,
I live just up the road from West bay, its a nice place to visit for say 1 hour & that's it, very few attractions, except the sandstone cliffs, the only realy good local is the West bay hotel just the other side of the car park, super local Fish food, expensive but you have to book.

Although I have not tried it myself I would suggest that the harbour is very difficult to get in & out of, you would be better off going on to Lyme, stay on the North wall side, not on the cobb, some really good local pubs, & plenty to see & do, you have a low tide around 14:00 so you should be ok after that on the flood.

Alternate go on to Beer and anchor in the bay, as LGS says its a beautiful area with some great pubs, hopefully will be there myself on Sat/Sun in Shady, so come on over.

Not sure if we'll make it, as mixed ability group, some with limited range, but been talking off line with some, and seems Lyme Regis better bet. We won't be there for long, actual event is just to go to Weymouth, and maybe a few more adventurous will go round Portland if weather good, and trip from Solent OK for the group - never can tell until you get them out there, and see what conditions like and how everyone is doing.

We need to get back to Weymouth for the evening, so won't be staying very long unfortunately. Need to shepherd any that do make it back round Portland.

If we make it, will holler!
