The place, not our usual drink.
Spent a very pleasant weekend there at anchor, excellent shelter from anything from the N or NW, good holding in a sandy bottom and very friendly locals. I was the only visiting boat, last time I stayed there, there was only one other boat at anchor so it's a bit of a novelty.
The sea was crystal clear, flat calm and the views of Beer Head and the cliffs are superb. The locals go out of their way to be friendly and helpful and there are several good pubs in the village.
What a pleasant change to have the whole bay to myself, the only early morning disturbance was the launching of the boats down the shingle beach. They even apologised to me for making a noise launching! Then there's also Jimmy Green Marine just up the hill. And what a view the allotments have on the edge of the cliffs.
Lyme Regis is only a few miles away, again a place which is largely ignored by visiting boats, and the other way there's Branscombe, well worth a few hours visit on a settled day. In fact the whole coastline between West Bay and Exmouth is superb, a recently designated world heritage site. What I really most enjoy is the solitude, most days between Beer and Exmouth and back we rarely see another boat after leaving Exmouth, the vhf stays mostly silent apart from the weather broadcasts and when you do see another boat there's almost always a friendly wave.
Suspect it's not like this on the Solent! Give me Lyme Bay any day. Just take my word for it, please don't all visit and spoil my peace and quiet ;-))
