Two of the teak faced insert panels in our cockpit seats had failed where 20 years of feet twisting as we climb around from behind the wheel had worn through the teak veneer. I have bought new made up panels and now have to stick them down. Howells recommend Sika 298 which seems to come in soft sausage packs rather than mastic tubes. I have never used this type of product, once opened what is the shelf life? It is apparently a relatively thin consistancy and should be spread with a notched spreader. I would welcome any advice on using this goo or suggestions for an alternative.

I keep all my sealants in the freezer and they stay fresh much much longer. You do need to wear gloves when dispensing otherwise your skin freezes to the gun!
You can buy a sausage gun on Ebay for £10. Use the same application method as mastic tubes and spread with a grooved spreader. No special skill needed. Keep remainder in freezer as above.

Availability of the Sika 298 from local chandleries is problematic so have to buy on line. Out of curiosity looked for equivalents from other brands. Found Everbuild Puraflex 40 PU Sealant & Adhesive. Lookiing at the data sheet for this it appears that Everbuild is a Sika company. It confirms that this is a one part polyurethane adhesive, as is the Sika 298. Not only is it cheaper than the Sika brand it is available ex stock at our local Toolstation and is in normal mastic tubes. Certainly worth buying one tube to try out.
