Atlantic Challenge. Boxer Cathy Brown crossed the Atlantic with Emma Richards on Pindar in July this year. Should be a good programme. We were in Falmouth when they finished and ended up joining them that night on the Pindar support boat and getting very drunk (and embarassing myself in front of Emma, Mike S and several other well know sailors)....

The question is: Did she ever wish to go sailing again?

Wouldn't like to meet her in a ring...
But we enjoyed the prog.
Nice sailing shots for a change..
But if I wanted to cross the pond at that speed I'd probably fly or steamship it..
Cheers Bob E..

She loved it and was very sad to say goodbye to Emma and co. She said she would carry on sailing and stay in touch with them I think.
She was a very nice person in the flesh but she does come over a little scary in the programme!

Scary? Not in my eyes- she was superb- honest, intelligent, fun and committed. The last time I saw Emma Richards on a programme like this it was Faking it, when she cam across as distracted and never there. It was nice to see some of the real Emma Richards- I would love to sail in boats like that.

<hr width=100% size=1>Just enjoy it.

Re: Another programme

thats left non sailors puzzled. What on earth was that all about. I'd rather have followed her boxing career.

This was a very shallow look at the subject. It was disjointed, The "experts/scientists"inputs were banal.

Camerawork was rubbish. There was no context.

A fit person with a resiliant personality can be taught enough to be some use on a racing yacht in six months. WoW! I'd never have guessed.

Re: Another programme

yeah, but we're clutching at anything remotely saily on TV i suppose. She only actually had a week or two of training, it seemed, not "5 months".

I was rather hoping there's be a falling out on the swedish boat race, followed by a fight in which cathy would knockem all out and sail the boat home. Now, that wd've been much more interesting...

Re: Another programme

Forget Cathys' ability, or 'was it good TV', Pindar and Alphagrapics got a hour of prime time TV, that was worth a fortune to them. There was hardly a shot when the name PINDAR was not visable, the boat was always refered to as 'Pindar', yes good move Pindar PLC!!!

Pindar

Andrew Pindars contribution to ocean racing goes alot further than just his backing of Emma and Co. He is a very pleasant, hospitable, friendly character and very generous. I agree about the promotion of Pindar in the programme. Out of interest, how many people on this formum know what Pindar do?

The more exposure ocean racing gets to the general public the better. The Vendee is currently being raced but have we heard anything about it? NO! The most challenging, demanding yacht race and not a squeak in the general press or on TV.

I thought the programme was OK. It wasnt as patronising as some sailing programmes have been - assumuning no one has any knowledge of sailing as its so "obscure". The programme was aimed at everyone not just us sailors and I think it proved the point about how tough ocean sailing is. When I met Emma after the finish she was telling me they had 70kts+ during that gale. Cameras never do justice to sea state either.

Re: Another programme

I would have thought it difficult enough to film on a boat racing across the Atlantic so to get enough coverage of things that went on to fit in to that part of the programme was quite good.

Missed some of the start but a gutsy girl for giving it a go. Agree also with TCM, there is not enough sailing or boating programs on tv so the ones that do get aired get a lot of viewers. Unless everyone points out to the telly people that we want more programs on boating we arent going to get them.

I understand that the people who put these programs together arent interested in content as long as they fill the remit and get the viewing figures they get paid which is more important to them than giving the boating community what they want. So unless we say how satisfied/unsatisfied we are they will keep on putting out what they want rather than what we want.

They get there info from people who fill in statistic forms, I think there are enough of us on these forums to voice our opinion together to get them to put on more boating programmes.

Quick question, who preferred this program to the coverage of the Southampton boat show ealrier this year?

Re: Another programme

Yup thats why sponsors put all that money into an event rather than stick a naff ad in the media. it is much better to put the money to good use helping people achieve something rather than throwing it on paper for all to browse past.

Good on you PINDAR, I don know what you do but will now have a look.

Re: Another programme

The SIBS programme should have had a point, to show people what they missed by not going but your right this programme did have a good purpose. Be interested to see others POV also

Re: I\'m sorry

but it's programmes like this that makes me wish for less sailing on TV. The only sailing programmes on TV that are any good at all are Americas Cup or Skiff racing. The rest is pap and makes us look somewhere between basket weavers and loonies.

It's time we faced up to the fact that sailing is not made to fit in the little box. Name me one sailing video/programme, that hasn't got Pete Goss rescuing that Dinelli bloke in it, thats any good. If it's to be anything less than risable they need to "stage" a lot of the action. There was a film years ago called "Wind" that had a feeble storyline but some great photography. It sunk without trace.

I like sailing and I can't stand anymore of this old tosh. How do non sailors feel. I started watching it with a family group of 12 people. 2 got to the end and both of us were just to lazy to move.

Re: Pindar

Far from being critical, and I agree with all you say about the exposure of, not only ocean racing, but ANY yachting on the box.

As far as Pidar is concerned I would say clever move! Many of us know that Pindar put a lot of time, money and passion into the sport. Who said there is no profit in print!

So, what sort of programme would you like to see.

What would make good content?
