Bavaria Yachts

I can understand people choosing and loving both types but cannot understand many's intolerance to other preferences.

I can't understand, myself, why it is that Bavaria owners of the more hysterical sort always seem to want to compare their boats with thirty year old Westerlies, and not with more expensive modern boats. I don't think a thirty year old Bavaria would look too clever next to a brand new Centaur either ...

Never underestimate the number of people who buy a boat or a motorcycle to "tinker/repair" them and get endless hours of pleasure without actually sailing or riding them! For a number their choice is dictated by economics.

And the number who buy boats to keep in a marina with the occasional short trip under power (sorry, "motor-sailing") to the next marina along.

Manky Auld Boat - generally a more heavily built GRP boat from the 70's to 90's.

:(:( wish i never asked now :(:(

our boat mite be old but i wouldnt refer to it as "manky"

and for fun per pound i expect it meet our demands without question
not to mention keep us safe in the odd north sea squall .

just want add tho , this thread has kept me entertained for days :D:D:D

I think it's because they are responding to the hysterical rants of thirty year old Westerly owners.

Calm down dear, it's only a commercial!

Bavaria owners of the more hysterical sort

Careful, Ubergeekian. If a teenager sailed round the world in a Bav 32 you'd actually go into orbit!

Not at all, m'dear fellow. As I've said, I have absolutely nothing against Bavarias. They're not my cup of tea as far as appearance goes, but then practically nothing modern is - I don't even like Contessas much. It's the owners I find interesting. Why so defensive?

As for teenagers sailing "round the world" ... well, on the whole I find teenagers sailing unaided around Britain rather more impressive.

Now, wait a minute! Extracting the micturation products from paranoid Bavaria owners seems perfectly good sport to me and ranks up there with anchors and Daka's take on the Colregs as a generator of pointless posts. But to aim even the smallest slight at MY boat - that, sir, is beyond the pale! It may be cramped, slow, wet bilged, difficult to reverse, prone to submarining in the slightest sea, over-priced (go on, make me an offer), a bit worn round the edges, but at least it looks like a boat. Never much cared for the lines of the Victoria 26 .......

Absolutely right. First thing I do with any new mechanical gadget inc a boat is to start to take it partly to bits. And it would make no difference to me if it were a brand new Bav or a Middle Aged Boat. It's part of the fun

Actually I tell a lie. I would much prefer to have owned my present boat when new because then I wouldnt have all these stainless bolts seized in aluminium cos I would have drawn them all and used Duralec. Do Bav install bolts with Germanic thoroughness or with British sloppiness?

Ever thought this thread might be sponsored and promoted by Bav on the basis that "all publicity is good publicity". Who ever mentions Jeanneau or Benny or Hanse or that Polish AWB maker these days?

I spent a cheerful day yesterday cleaning underneath my Jouster on the Kirkcudbright scrubbing grid. She's 35 years old, she's been in the water for the past six full years ... and not the slightest hint of a blister. You may be able to take that one off your list!

Incidentally do Bavarias come with radar, AIS and autopilot as standard?

Bows are very strong, but the attachment of forestay to bow is vunerable.

Another example - the stemhead fitting on Clarionet, a wooden 1960's racing boat, gave way a few years ago whilst we were tacking in the Solent just after the start of a race. The forestay became a lethal swinging weapon with a lump of mahogany plus most of the bow fittings attached. Fortunately quick thinking by the foredeck crew meant that spinnaker halyards were put in place fast enough to save the mast. On inspection the bronze stemhead showed that it had been cracked for a long time and it was the final few mm of metal that gave way in relatively light conditions.

Best example of over exaggeration killing an argument that I have seen for some time.
Divide by two?

Which figures do you dispute?

The refit budget is based on a typical 36' Westerly that is 30 years old, that has not benefited from any major equipment investment in the last 20 years and just essential maintenance in the past 7 years.

The objective of the refit is to bring the hypothetical yacht up to the same level of domestic comfort and offshore cruising reliability as a 5 year old Bavaria.

I see little wrong with these figures if any some are on the small size ,I have recently had New mast, boom, standing rigging, sails, and all new stantions, Bimini and hull painting.
The cost for that 60,000euro This amount and the value of the hull would have paid for a Very good Bavaria

You should change your avatar to Doubting Thomas:):)

I've been getting some quotes recently and I reckon either there'll be a lot of hidden extras on top of my quotes, or your boat is enormous.

On Bavarias though, so many charter companies use them and have tourists bumping them off the rocks and off each other all year round, yet there are comparatively few reports of problems => they must be reasonably solid.
