Bavaria lost keel again

in case you cant take in what you read 4m thick in places is not the whole hull
I sense some back tracking now.

In a thread about the loss of a keel, you state:
any way they are only 4mm thick in the keel area so prehaps that was why it worked loose and fell off
There are 4 high stress areas in any mono yacht hull:
  1. Keel attachment.
  2. Mast base (deck stepped or keel stepped).
  3. Shroud attachment points.
  4. Rudder Mount.
You have stated you know that Bavarias have a 4mm hull thickness in the most highly stressed part of the hull. Is this still your considered opinion?

jonjo5.have a read of postings 105/106/110.my concidered opinion is worthless as i know nothing about modern boat building, but my conection with a bav owner whos boat was in repair after agrounding is enough for me to keep an eye on such things and nose around a bit in repair yards(.oxford dictionary, several is more then two by definition but not many)the orginal post is about a keel falling off a bav,i know of several bav with what was then thin lam, with the knowledge that iknow(ie,several bav with thin lam around keel area) i put my pennys worth in.whilst you mention rudders watch out for the alli collar on the stock can corrode quite quickly

There are several posts from a previous Bav 32 owner in the german Yacht-Forum. He never grounded his Bav but the keel of his boat bended in and out that much, that he sued Bav and they had to take it back.

Search in the homeland of Bav the yacht-forum.de and you will find endless owners complaining.

I think you are referring to flexing of the hull around the keel support often seen as a yacht is put ashore and lowered into a cradle. Most round bilge fin feel yacht hulls do this to some degree.

If flexing is seen at sea something far more serious is wrong, the tabbing between the hull and bilge grid tray moulding might have broken. A grounding is the most likely explanation but mishandling ashore or a manufacturing fault could be the reason.

So one guy had a problem with his Bav 32, people have been known to lie for personal financial advantage, perhaps he could not admit to his wife he damaged his new toy due to a nav error. Regardless of the explanation no doubt a new VW Golf owner somewhere in the world is moaning that VW build **** cars, what is your point?

I don't have a Bavaria yacht and am unlikely to do so, it's just a personal matter that they wouldn't suit me.

However I do thik that this b******s about 4mm hull thickness at the keel is just that, BS !

Think of it from an engineering point of view; impossible.

Bavarias seem good cruising boats to me, and I know YM Offshore skippers who've chartered them and came back happy; maybe not thrilled to bits as in getting it on the plane, but happy with the boat.

No connection to Bavarias in any way, I just hate to see ill-informed bolleaux rubbish good boats.

does anybody know how many bav recalled for that other keel fault the under strength one ?

There seems to be an agenda here, rather like Westerlys' with Centaur keels, now with Bavaria and nonsense about keels falling off.

Because a relatively large number of boats were produced, by the law of averages someone is going to have problems with the odd one, through incompetent misuse.

Accidents happen for sure, but incompetent people don't check out their boats before a charter and may bring it back in any state, as we know even keels can't be assumed to be there, but an incident when a boat turned up sans keel after a further charter trip or two is hardly the boat or designers' fault !

I'm reminded of the vicious slur campaign against the DC-10 airliner; among the accidents listed by their arch rivals ( Lockheed ) as the DC-10's fault was an accident in bad vis', running into a vehicle which had been left on the runway !

All the Match 42's and 38's produced up to mid 2005. The UK importer dealt with an early case in 2004 according to a Yachting World article published at the time.

The Match 35 was the last model into production and was not recalled. Many years later I heard that the Adriatic Match 42 charter fleet had been shipped with their keels unattached due to a tunnel height limit. The local agent fitted the keels.

This explains why the photos of that sick fleet published by the charter operator showed keels with a random number of keel bolt backing plates. Whatever your opinion of Bavarias their factory automation would not let a batch of yachts out with 1, 2 or 3 backing plates when the keels are factory fitted.

now your just plain showing off,had to look that one up.post 105/106/110 might help.im going to bed now im sailing off tomoz ,but i will be back if you want to keep this going, but not till i get a wifi signal and get bored

no lost on me dont watch tv.no its some peeps dream to go off sailing with out a care in the world go where thay want when thay want how thay want, and guess what i am doing it.but all good things must come to an end just not sure when yet,YOU DID ASK

bav34 and seajet, couldnt sleep due to my internet persona honesty and integrity,so did a bit of googling for you boat builder experts, apparently around 2005 8mm lam was all that was required around the keel area(my point being 4mm against 8mm not such as big diff as you might think)but you allready know that, thou they did promise to lay up to 13mm,and have since gone even further,if you google baveria yacht keels you will see some examples one of which the site looks like this one and if you read on you will read about a boat builder who repaired strengthen bav keels and who him self saw lam around the keel area very thin.now i dont belive everything i read either but i do belive what i see,so make sure you are right before you attack my internet persona as im a jack russell and dont give up,do i hate bavs...no do i love bavs...no,every boat on the water is a compromise, you make your choice knowing these and then have fun..and there are loads of faults with other boats too,i will go back in my kennel and stay there lest called

jeeeezus, why didnt someone tell me,just been googling anf farting about all night only to find that there are loads of other peeps who know/saw/belive about the light lay up around these areas and its been debated to death.the company lost/wrote off 1 bn euros(thats alot of fibre glass to get back)etc etc feck it im going to bed, jeeeeeeeezus
