Bavaria 34, The ideal starter yacht according to YM

Strange coincidence isn't it

Surely nothing can beat the fast sailing, dry cockpit, bright airy cabin, private toilet and comfortable cabin seating to be found in a deep coal mine err sorry Co32 :D

From the archives of YM I offer 2 videos both credited to Snooks - sorry about the music! I know which is more pleasing to my eye.

The thing with brands is that it's all about perceptions and perceptions change. A car ran into the back of me a few years back and I went out and bought a new E Series with all the gizmos -- room for the w/e sailing junk, comfortable and really nice to drive ..."dad, you do know you have just bought the uncoolest car on the planet", came the nippers response!

Oh well, you're off the hook now, because I suspect that BMW have just become the most "uncool" brand in th UK

You bet the Con32 is a beauty no doubt and in a force 9 give me the Con rather than the Bav each and every time. But those looks cost a lot, you have to sacrifice space, speed, privacy and comfort to get them, but if looks and storm force survivability are what you want in a boat then then the Con is the one.

Suggest you carry on watching the first one and after it is the Chris Beeson video of the later 33 which I have. The earlier 32 was short lived, partly because of its ungainly appearance (courtesy of BMW stylists!).

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to be honest who buys a boat that has as its main attraction something that you cannot see when using it - only in videos!

BTW would not like to be one of the 4 big blokes in the Co 32 having to go into the cabin after a cold and wet sail.

+1. Also interesting to see how much less the CO32 pitches than the Bav.

Well now, taste can't be legislated for, but yes the Bav 34 looks a bit Island Packety doesn't it. That said, the design of the new 33 is much much better and to achieve a sleekish look with full standing room throughout is pretty impressive from a design perspective.

The Contessa is of course also a lovely boat, but I'm guessing the new Bav will be way quicker: in fact 5.8-6.6kts in 10kts TWS / 35 AWA is not bad! Farr is an accomplished outfit and seems to have the knack of marrying faster yacht performance with a spacious hull and delivering a really nice balance.

As indicated above, I'd not be at all surprised if Farr has nailed this one and if they have - fair doos to Bavaria and good luck to them.

Oh dear me. Don't mention the war ;-0

What a to-do when almost every post has supported the idea that the boat in question would make a good first buy. Imagine the paddy if some serious criticism were offered. Exploding scrotums would be the least of it.

I should declare that I have been suggesting the Bavaria 32/4 as a good starter buy in every question of this type for, at least, ten years.
