Barracuda 45's

Re: Barracuda 45 'White Spirit'

We were off Portsmouth when Bob Fisher managed to interface Barracuda Of Tarrant with Bembridge Ledge; 10/10 for cool, I remember him saying to Solent Coastguard ' Yes we're on deck with the raft inflated alongside, the hull's cracking now so if the lifeboat could be along fairly soon we'd be ever so grateful ' or words to that effect.

I believe she was first taken into Bembridge then went elsewhere for repairs, but it's great that she was saved and is still going.

Re: Barracuda 45 'White Spirit'

Bob Fisher's was the cold moulded wooden plug iirc. Sadler had lots of problems with the plastic ones twisting under heavy loads.

I remember Bob Fisher on Barracuda interfacing with the putty in the Lymington River when he tried to go inside us (in a J29) heading to a finish at the RLymYC clubhouse on a Thursday evening race.

It was on a falling tide, and we enjoyed his predicament as we supped our beers.

I'm the new proud owner of Full Away (apparently n°6, thanks to this forum) recently bought in 2024 and now based on Lake Geneva. Before this, Full Away was in South France (2015-2024) and this previous owner wrote a blog about it : barracuda45.wordpress.com/

I found some pictures of the catalog.

I used to crew on Barracuda. It was, erm, noisy but entertaining. And fast.

WOW!! Enjoy, I done many miles on a 45 (Moon boots). Amazing boat. Please do add some photos.

I really fancied one in about 1996. I had a long chat with an owner and he explained that owning one was like being married to a very demanding and beautiful woman. Huge amounts attention and cash required in exchange for having the best eye candy in town plus a sensational ride. The more I looked into them I decided to get a Sigma 41 instead.
I now have a current state of the art JPK and the similarities of design are huge. The Barracuda was 30 years ahead of its time. Just a shame the construction and engineering skills didn’t match those of the designer.
Extraordinary boat.

Dear all,

Thanks for your interest and sorry for the late of my response.

Some news about Barracuda's own by French owners :
0 : ex Barracuda of Tarrant now Basic Instinct since 2011, still in Patagonia for commercial cruises. Images on Conceptvoile.com (1st image)
2) ex Quick Hook now Dracene (Brittany, France) 2nd image
4) ex MoraMora now Gwennili (Brittany, France) 3rd image
5) ex White Spirit now Archi (French Guyana)
6) Full Away (Geneva Lake) last picture.

Always take a peek at the one in Fecamp, on the way through.

Radical design, for the mid 80's (the Vancouver 28 & 32 are contemporaries and the Rustler 36 only predates her by 6 years): twin rudders, beam carried aft......... Although that beam looks quite moderate by today's standards.

Thanks John_Silver, I contact him, I have currently contacted 6 on 19 owners.
Yes :)

Thanks :)

I found the owner, thanks a lot John_Silver !

This Barracuda is the ex-Brighton Barracuda, the ex-Incommunicado, the ex-Shanguan and still have the fixed keel with 2m draft build by Sadler Yachts (apparently a special request from the first owner).

The current owner have it since 2008 and bring it from Spain.
He made a lot of work of refit and some majors improvements :
- intern shrouds between shrouds chain and mast foot (through the galley for portside and same for starboard)
- under the table, he removed the floor to fix huge delamination,
- remove the original floor/table of the cockpit and put a simple opening deck hatch,
- a smaller engine (only 30cv !)
-...

All this allows a very impressive weight of 5,8t, a impressive regatta rank, a top speed at 27 knots, a lot of surfs at 20 knots...

About seven or eight years ago there was a Barracuda 45 in Fleetwood. It was called Phantoms Wake.Anybody know its whereabouts.Am embarrassed to admit that Howard's Way was the reason I got into sailing at the end of the eighties.I would pay a lot of money for a ride on one.

My boat (Parker 31) was described by (I think) Yachting Monthly as a mini barracuda. Same designer, lifting keel, long waterline length for its time, light displacement and so on. Sadly, not as breathtakingly fast as a Barracuda, but happily, way better build quality!

I’ve been eyeing up this beauty for a while - not completely dissimilar to a barracuda, in concept at least:

Very nice

Hello,
Does anyone have the report on the Barracuda 45 test report carried out in june 1988 please ?
Sadly, we can't buy it with the following website Barracuda 45 boat review
Not worth the paper it’s printed on. Written by people who did not understand the concept and aim of the design. Rubbish build quality yes, rubbish handicap yes, but fantastic experience at speed or going through canals with family. Had mine for over 30 years and not for sale till I give up sailing.

Still have Ronhilda. Did say goodbye to the Ford 1.6 XLD a year ago as found spares were getting hard to source. At around 100,000 miles and 37years young some more invasive maintenance is occasionally now required but that applies to us all. Was out looking at the AC racers last weekend as well as joining in a club event. After cockpit salad lunch in the sun around Cambrian wreck wind filled in and off we went at 11kts. Watched the ACers sail off towards the Owers. Later in the evening came back to Chi with my modified furling headsail pulling well I made from second hand bits and bobs. Crew and I had really fantastic day.
