I've been recommended Banner batteries as replacements for my auxiliaries.
I have a bank of 2 x 135AHr and these are not ever used for starting the engine so steady discharge rather than heavy cranking.

Has anyone used this make before - I'm told they are popular for canal boats?

I also dallied with the idea of using 6v batteries - can anyone tell me of the benefits. I do know others that swear by them but I'm not really sure why....

Thanks all.

Piddy.

No idea about Banner batteries, I'm afraid, but the 6V you've heard recommended are probably proper deep-cycle jobs, as used on golf carts etc. such as Trojan T105. There's nothing inherently better about their being 6V (until you try lifting a 12V of similar capacity to a pair of T105s).

In 2012 both my service AGM batteries died while cruising in Croatia. I needed sealed batteries as they are buried deep under the cockpit locker floor with difficult access and the only ones I could find in a wide area of southern Istria that would physically fit the containers and were of a similar A/hr, were Banner Gel ones. I was sceptical but did not have much choice. Made in Austria and well regarded by those who seem to know about these things - they have never given any problem since.

I believe Banner and Trojan are a couple out of only a handful that actually make leisure batteries. The rest are re badged standard batteries. Compare the weights like for like, I think you'll find the banner are heavier than the cheaper options due to the increase in lead used to help with the deep cycle.

I have Banner and they have been perfect but then they are only a couple of years old..

Any one of Banner, varta, Exide or Trojan leisure batteries should serve you well. Look for EN 50342, I believe it means they meet the requirements of a true leisure battery.

this may help make up your mind
