Just got back from 8 days on boat in Spain. Perfect weather sea dead calm except last Fri night & Sat
Left port at 22.00 Fri evening for a night of Morey eel fishing about 12 miles from port, weather forecast wind East 2 -3 mph clear sky, full moon.it was a perfect evening for fishing at about 01.00 the wind picked up a little & by 01.30 it was blowing a gale the sea had changed from a slight swell to waves 3 to 4 metres high in the space of 30 - 40 mins, had to run into the Mar Menor for shelter & anchor in the lee of Isle de Baron for the rest of the night. Spent most of next day at anchor, and late afternoon in Tomas Maestow tied to the waiting berth. Walked over to White Lady but no one home so had a few beers. by 19.00 the wind had dropped & by 20.00 the sea had died down considerably so headed for port arrived back without incident & very wet. All the rest of the week weather perfect sea dead calm & no wind.
Lots of peeps think the Meds always calm but it can change in minute's this time it caught me totally by suprise. no warning at all. Its times like this that I'm glad I invested in my plotter & other safety equipment. Also the first time Ive felt the need to tell crew to don lifejackets, sit where I can see them & hold on.
Lesson's learnt
Never listen to people who say you dont need this & you dont need that, its only the Med.
Had great week fishing caught good quality fish in large numbers. Cant wait to get back on the 13th only 11 days to go for another 10 days of tuna fishing........Nat

That's what they say! "Never trust the sea."

No. bigest one 1 metre about 17 mile out. but lots of quality Dolphin fish (lampuga) & some good Moray eels. Will be going further out next trip with Spanish fishing boat, I gave his dad Juan (he,s the caretaker in the flats above a bar I use)some fish & he brought his son over who offered to show me some good tuna marks. He's got a Rodman with 2 massive outboards on it.

We've been in the Med a couple of seasons now and I'm regularly surprised by the sudden wind changes, usually not forecasted. Got caught in a completely unforecasted gale off S of France last year. This year we are in Denia and the weather can be pretty changeable there too.
Med weather is definitely not always as advertised!

Lozzer, most of the guys seem to go in the mouth just off Gib, I spend most of my time in the bar watching them come back and its been a quiet yeat this year, Last year they had a problem with Orca following the boats and taking the tuna that had been caught and tied to the back.
JAWS in real life.

Fishing off a lovely boat like yours, the very suggestion Tony.
Wouldnt want smelly fish on my F36...... Mind you I've got my hands on a smashing fast fishing boat now, so gonna go ahead and learn.

Re: 1 metre tuna

To catch the big stuff you have to go 20 miles out I've not got a really big one yet but other people I know have. Best way is to pull a lure along behind you at about 4 to 6 knts about 50-60 yards behind boat. you will need at least a 50lb plus class rod and about 400 yards of 50lb minimum line on a good reel. This will handle all but the really big stuff which is few & far between, but they are about.
For dolphin fish just go out near a wreck & drift, they love to hide in the shade under the boat and are very easy to catch using any method. You will soon know when they are about as you will see them swimming round the boat, beautiful multi coloured fish, terrific eating smallest we caught 2' biggest 3' you only need light tackle for these.
Best fishing is Sep. Oct. Nov. after that Ive only ever caught small stuff apart from eels. If you go there for fishing I will give you some decent marks which have always produced fish for me...............Nat

Hi Phil
Will be over same time as you & will call in to see you, If you are not about will pin my phone No on your boat.or if you want pm me yours & I will phone you before I come over
From what i,ve seen of Tomas it seems to be very good with plenty of bars & restauraunts. I've never had any problems tying up to the fuel pontoon opposite the little shop for a couple of hrs or so, as long as you buy something & ask first.
When I was there on the Sat Many places were closed which seemed odd as the seasons not really over yet. It looks to be very clean & well run but I cant really comment other than that.Ive not had any bad feedback from anyone about the place but I think its one of those places that if your face fits you are ok. I spent an afternoon there some months ago talking to one of the charter boat skippers, he was friendly enough but not very helpfull with regards to nautical information & local do's & dont's.You know the type lots of picture & no sound, in debt up to the eyeballs & no work. Reckons he had all the licences but couldent or would'nt give me any tips how he got them. Got the impression it was a bit clique. buts thats only my opinion.
Try Sardine Island for lunch(Perdeguara) get there before 12 or you may have trouble getting on pontoon, anything closer to shore than 50 metres will be to shallow for you. I have charts for Mar Menor & you are welcome to study them.
Look foward to meeting you & having a beer..........Nat
PS theres an similar boat to yours in Torreveija called The Ram.
