Bad odour as water tank gets low

There's a really bad odour periodically aboard my boat.

I have tracked it down to when the water tank gets low.

Any good solutions?

Stale water

If it is the water itself, then drain the tank and shock dose with bleach and a full tank, run through each tap until you can smell bleach then leave for 24 hours. Empty tank through all taps, refill and run the clean water through the taps. Then you're good to go. If the water from the tap does not smell ( you dont say it does) I am not sure of the assumed relevance of the tank being half full.

There is i suppose a little more air for the smell to gather, but for that surely it would be obvious from the smell of the tap water their was an issue with it to permeate aboard. What does stale water smell like. Honest question. Sewage I know the smell of, but river water which one could say is contaminated does not generally smell for example.

Thanks...whats funny is it only smells when it reaches the bottom of the tank
