Backstay sail

Very interesting. I assume that Piota is a monohull ? What is her length ? (So that I know whether to resize the sail for my 29' yacht.) Also I am not sure what you mean by "Hollows in brackets." Thanks. (I seem to be about 9 years behind !)

I think hollows means the leech, foot and luff are cut hollow, that is to say the opposite of a leech with roach for example.

Hi Alistair.

Yes I managed to retrieve the name “Krusty” from my own becoming Krusty memory

I have just reposted one of your father’s threads on the PBO page about his remarkable Pentland Firth passage planning chart. Do you have a copy of it?

Thanks.......your Dad was inspirational

And drawings or pictures so I can get a better idea of set up please.??
Keith (aka Krusty) refers in posts to his Albums, a feature of the previous version of this forum - these appear to missing now. I made copies of the V Twin riding sail material which I'll now try to find and see if I can share on here

For more pics and info on dads riding sail do a search for "piotaskipper albums" which I re-posted a while ago.
One of them is about the riding sail.
Regarding his Pentland Firth passage planning chart, no I do not have a copy.

Hi Fascadale, Thanks for that. Any idea what
"(Hollows in brackets): Luff, 8ft (1.5in.)"
means ?
The instructions do not mention a hollow tube for a bolt rope to be inserted, but 2" tape folded in its middle around the leading edge of the sail (as I understand it). Thanks.

The luff is cut hollow so it does not flutter or need support with a batten, in this case the luff has a 1.5" hollow. In mathematical terms the luff is an arc with 1.5" being the arc height or rise.

As described the 2" webbing is not folded, it forms the leading edge(arguably a centreline really) with rings at either end.
