Interestingly, the baby stay on mine was the most highly stressed piece of rigging. 10mm, same gauge as the main shrouds and back stay. Opposed by a pair of 8mm lowers. Did quite a lot of windward sailing, and about every 2 or 3 years one of the strands would break - just off the swage at one or other end of the stay.

Swept back spreaders may not have a baby stay for the genoa to catch on, but they have a big downside in that you are severely limited in how far you can let out the mainsail running downwind.

The inverted Y backstay with the right dimensions can make also for an excellent off centre dipole for marine SSB and ham radio.
