Does anyone know the Generic coding for the Autohelm 4000 drive belt. I undestand from a previous thread on the 3000 that is is a standard belt and there is no need to pay then Autohelm premium....
Sorrrry don't know the size, but if you still have the original, take it to an industrial belt/Drive supplier like Fenner, BSL(Bearing Services Ltd) or similar supplier in your area. You'll get it for about a ¼ the price from Autohelm. The size is usually written on the belt as a code number.
Hi there,
I posted the original query about the autohelm belt.
I tried a few automotive suppliers, and BSL did have the belt listed, but when I called them, they said the P/N I quoted was very rarely used today, and they could order some, but would need to order a quantity of at least 40!
I phoned Raytheon, (Who it seems have taken over Autohelm), and they had some in stock. I ordered two, at a cost of about £20, including VAT and postage....not much more than BSL. They arrived about 3 days later.
The phone no. of Raytheon is 02392-693611. The P/N you will need to get from your old belt, as obviously the length will vary with different installations.
Hi,
Further to my earlier reply, I believe the belts break because, on my boat, I have to make the belt tension very tight, otherwise the belt slips on the wheel drum.
This drum is knurled, (Doesn't have teeth). I have considered reversing the broken belt, (Teeth outwards), and bonding a length of it to the drum. I should then be able to put less tension on the drive belt.
Go into your local car accessory shop and get yourself a can of belt dressing, its a spray on rubber compound wich you put on the pulleys of your car to stop the fan belt slipping, i've done it it works!!!!!!!.......keith
To avoid the slipping problem, I attach the autohelm belt to the steering wheel drum with a woodworkers' C-clamp. Provided there isn't too big a change of course, this works perfectly.
