My previous boat had basic 75HP Yanmar engines more than 20 years old. My current boat has modern 320HP Yanmar engines with sophisticated electronics etc. If i look at the Yanmar website it lists it's authorised service agents in my general area. Are all of these authorised and trained for all Yanmar engines? Do they all have the required diagnostic equipment and relevant training for all Yanmar engines. I could ask the same questions about Volvo and other engines.

No other owners around who have had work done ? Process of elimination ?
I appreciate your effort to help, but I was hoping someone on the forum might actually know the answer to the question I'm asking.
I've been in my current marina for over 20 years and I think I know what's what, and who's who, at this stage. My question is not related to any current work requirement which I have, or indeed is not just about my area.

Obvious thing to do is ask the individual service agents, yes?

Yeah. You'd think that, wouldn't you. But this is Türkiye. Ask one of those lads if he's authorised for all engine models and he'll say, of course I am, and if you need anything done it'll have to wait until tomorrow as I've been called away to fix a problem on the Space Shuttle.

Looks like you have your answer. They can’t be trusted, irrespective of what the facts are.

Apologies to the Yanmar website. It seems my online enquiry did go through yesterday evening, and I've had a reply this morning from the Yanmar distributor in Turkiye which includes the following:

"Unfortunately, all Yanmar Service Dealers had no full knowledge all about the engines and their equipment however, we are supporting them if they have an issue.
Do you have any problem on your engine and/or its electronics at the moment?
Please let me know and I can support you by using a closest service dealer or organizing well experienced technician depending on a problem on the engine."

I've replied and I'm hoping for a bit more clarity but, at least, I now have a contact if I encounter a problem.
Impressive response time from Yanmar 👏.

That is the sort of reply I would expect. Yanmar like others such as Volvo, CAT, Cummins will have a set of requirements for "authorised" dealers that will include such things as minimum equipment, level of training, spares stockholding etc. This has become increasingly challenging to enforce with the new engine technology, particularly electronic controls. These engines represent a small (but increasing) part of Yanmar's range so currently demand for servicing is limited compared with old style engines. Markets like Turkey are difficult to service as the local market for new complete engines is small and most of the demand is for servicing engines installed elsewhere so recovery of capital costs of having the necessary equipment and expertise gets reflected in higher labour charges.

We see similar here where the labour rates for dealers in these electronic controlled engines are 30-40% higher than independents or dealers in the more simple mechanical engines. Having said that, the more intelligent dealers may have different rates for different engines to avoid losing business on the simple engines to independents.

Hope your contact does the business when you need him!

Personally, I'm surprised by the reply. The situation as he outlined is much as I would have expected, but I'm surprised how open he is about it. It's good to have this guy's details but I hope I never have need to call on him.
I asked the question on here hoping we might have an authorised engine service agent or two in our small community who'd share some wisdom.
I will probably get my regular mechanic to continue to service my new engines - oil, filters, fuel, belts, impeller, anode etc. He's a careful lad and takes pride in his work.
