Attaching a winch to mast

When fitting a halyard winch to an alloy mast what is the best method of securing it in place? screws, rivets, bolts, glue? Is it best to secure it to a wooden blank first? Any advice will be well received!

Normally fitted on a purpose made alloy pad/bracket, the winch is bolted to the pad/bracket, then the pad is riveted to the mast.

I am going to remove my mast mounted winches and fit them on the coachroof and lead all controls to the cockpit. What size is your mast? as the backing pads may fit, they are made of stainless steel and rivetted to the mast.
