So how heavy are these infernal contraptions. Do they weigh a lot more than a decent dinghy and outboard?

Whilst true, Australian Cats tend to be very much lighter built than the brit ones. I have seen a jet ski on the back of a 9m Catalac. It did have a lot of liveaboard gear as well, which meant she was well down, and performance to windward (never a catalac's best point of sale), was even worse. but the boat was being used as the mothership for a charter op, and the jet ski and being able to ski was an important part of the business.
