Liveblog updates here if anyone is interested/has all day to spare! http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/10726311.Sailor_accused_of_crashing_boat_into_tanker/
"In interview he suggested he was outside the prohibited zone"
That's just surreal. He hit the ship!
12:49pm
Dr Baines was asked if the position of a GPS device could be affected if it was in a zip pocket. He responded it would have to be a question taken up with the manufacturer.
If even you are not on his side he doesn't stand much of a chance .
Did the skipper ever get chance to put his hands up and pay a fine or is he compelled to let the court charade proceed and have the added court costs ?
Can't see the relevance of GPS. It doesn't tell you that you are about to hit a big ship, and anyone sailing in those waters SHOULD know about the moving prohibited zone. 100% likelihood that the ship is inside the channel where the zone applies and hence where you shouldn't be at the moment a big ship is passing through - GPS or no GPS.
It seems that the skipper has claimed that his GPS wasn't working, though precisely why that stopped him seeing the Ruddy Great Ship does not seem to have emerged yet.

I don't think he has claimed not to have seen it, it looks like he didn't anticipate it changing course due to another boat.
The defense council is trying to claim there is a speed limit of 10 knots put in place by QHM. Nothing on the QHM website that would apply to the central Solent - anyone know what he's talking about?
Google Solent speed limit - there's a PDF on cowes.co.uk - http://www.cowes.co.uk/cms/CMS/content/S635090526078670067/Solent speed limits-1.pdf

Hmm! Looking again at the You tube video, I think it is difficult to be sure whether the incident was indeed in the MPZ. Looks like it was taken from somewhere in Cowes. After the incident occurs, is that Prince Consort or Gurnard NCM?
Yes that matches my understanding, trying to claim that is anything to do with a tanker in the channel is, well, interesting....!
Nothing on there that would affect the tanker. Unless it was in place just for Cowes week.
