"In interview he suggested he was outside the prohibited zone"

That's just surreal. He hit the ship!

If even you are not on his side he doesn't stand much of a chance .

Did the skipper ever get chance to put his hands up and pay a fine or is he compelled to let the court charade proceed and have the added court costs ?

I am suprised that the witnesses are being so cautious see:

12:49pm
Dr Baines was asked if the position of a GPS device could be affected if it was in a zip pocket. He responded it would have to be a question taken up with the manufacturer.

Can't see the relevance of GPS. It doesn't tell you that you are about to hit a big ship, and anyone sailing in those waters SHOULD know about the moving prohibited zone. 100% likelihood that the ship is inside the channel where the zone applies and hence where you shouldn't be at the moment a big ship is passing through - GPS or no GPS.

It seems that the skipper has claimed that his GPS wasn't working, though precisely why that stopped him seeing the Ruddy Great Ship does not seem to have emerged yet.

I don't think he has claimed not to have seen it, it looks like he didn't anticipate it changing course due to another boat.

... and that the GPS would help him visualise where he was in relation to the shipping channel? Or what? Surely the conveniently spaced green and red buoys do that rather more efficiently.

Does anyone know the exact location of the collision (lat and long)? If it was indisputably within the moving prohibited zone I am trying to work out which leg he was trying to stand on when saying the words "not guilty".

The defense council is trying to claim there is a speed limit of 10 knots put in place by QHM. Nothing on the QHM website that would apply to the central Solent - anyone know what he's talking about?

Interesting tactic - claim the tanker was speeding!

the speed limit of 10 kts is applicable to 1000 yards offshore - 1000 yards is 0.49Nm ... and depending on where you measure it from would be about where PC buoy is. As PC buoy is a north cardinal it's safe to assume the tanker would be north of that and therefore outside the speed limit zone. Just checked the video and the tanker did indeed pass north of the north cardinal ...

I hope the defence have something rather better to rely on!

Hmm! Looking again at the You tube video, I think it is difficult to be sure whether the incident was indeed in the MPZ. Looks like it was taken from somewhere in Cowes. After the incident occurs, is that Prince Consort or Gurnard NCM?

Doesn't the Moving Prohibited Zone move with the ship, so that any collision is by definition within it? Thiz all be most bafflifying to we yokels vrom the shoires.
