At this rate I'll be banned by the end of November

Re: I was thinking of letting....

You're certainly not the only contributor to this forum, or Van de Stadt design, in that marina.

Re: Bollocks and double bollocks

<<<The 59 is probably reckless, the 39 is potentially inconsiderate.>>>

What exactly has the speed limit (and its enforcement by speed cameras) got to do with considerate driving? The moment a vehicle starts moving that is potentially inconsiderate. If the speed limit is a measure of considerate driving then why do countries which are very similar in most ways have very different speed limits (including in a few cases, none at all)?

And to who exactly do you set the speed limit to be considerate to - you on your bike or me on my bike, when if I rode a bike I would like the speed limit to be zero for cars because I do not trust drivers who think that a posted speed limit has any merit as far as safety or consideration to other road users is concerned.

Re: At this rate I\'ll be banned by the end of November

If it's just points & fines to you then you are very lucky. For a lot of families speeding has led to a loss far greater than cash or licence.

I, for one, would be very happy to see the country covered in cameras. Judging by what I read on usenet, forums etc it seems an impending ban is the only thing that slows people up.

In which case I am evidently an anarchist!.. well mostly anyway

Cruise Control

Yeah - I use cruise control. Its not infalible. Thursday night on the A303 11 pm I set it at 55 in a 50 limit - no traffic at all and because I was flashed last week at 5 am,I decided to be very careful.. I went over the brow of a steep hill and car increased speed - passed a camera and flash - looked at speedo - 60 mph. I am really totally pissed off. the ONLY time I have ever been caught in cameras is V early in the morning or very late at night. - NEVER had one during the day.

Re: At this rate I\'ll be banned by the end of November

Lets be clear about this as a Civil Engineer that has designed roads it is INAPPROPPRIATE SPEED that kills and various features create accident black spots. The current emphasis on speed limits is a misrepresentation of the facts that have satisfied an uninformed section of the population and enabled the government to make money while appearing to do something instead of really making a contribution to road safety that would cost money.

In the 60's the Road reseach laboratory visited every crash within 50mls of their HQ and documented each injury and identified what caused it. This resulted in a number of car design changes a few being bonnet mascots being remove, the longitudinal chrome strip along the centre of the bonnet on 1100's being removed (used to go through the windscreen and spear an occupant) and even toggle switches that had projections being replaced by rocker switches.

Modern cars have many safety features and while I am not sure of the current facts I suspect that the majority of the most serious injuries are due to not wearing seat belts/drink driving and when pedestrians/cyclists/motorcylists come into contact with cars. I doubt that few are due to doing an extra 10 to 15mph over the limit on a dual carriageway when conditions permit which normally means little traffic and therefore often at night.

I do 40 000mls a year and my last 500 000mls have been without accident and I confess to frequently speeding (as I try to make quick journey times mostly out of busy hours). I have now accepted the inevitable (I believe I have been fortunate in avoiding endorsements so far but at the cost of paying more attention to looking for cameras that I should) and recently changed my car to a diesel with both cruise control and a speed check warning.

I will vote at the next election for whatever party promises to ban revenue raising cameras permitting only ones outside schools/hospitals/pedestrian areas, and reduce taxes - unfortunatly such a party may also be an extreme right/left wing party but I am so fed up they will still get my vote.

Remember the definition of a politician is someone who has no experience of real life, cannot run a business and make money themself but believes they know best how to regulate your life and spend your hard earned money!

Every cloud has a silver lining and starting next year I will take 3 to 6 months off each year to reduce both my tax liability and my mileage (and consequental risk of fines/endorsements), and go sailing instead!

I am old enough to remember the times when people would not work overtime as due to taxation it was not worth it - is this progress?

Your post is so ignorant it does not merit any reply - Sod it, I've done it!.

Re: From zero to nine in three days

Rabbie, perhaps one reply would be enough .. a bit like a caution from a policeman rather than a plethora of ill advised and revenue collecting tickets from speed cameras?

Re: From zero to nine in three days

Rabbie,

Wake up and smell the roses. The Police force possibly by no fault of their own are only interested in statistics. As far as they are concerned a prosecution is a prosecution and it's much easier to trace law abiding motorist than a mugger wearing a balaclava carrying a gun.

I'm sorry if the truth hurts but why bother actually doing what the public want when they can criminalize the easy targets - The motorist.
They see the motorist as a robber who leaves his business card every time he does a job, we are an easy target and make their treasured statistics look good.

We already have one of the safest road systems in the world and of course it would be nice to make it even safer but they need to prioritise things. Rapes, muggings, murders demand a higher priority than a speeding offence but the Police put a disproportionate amount of effort into catching the east target motorist.

Why is it you see more police traffic patrol cars than bobbies on the beat? You can drive down any motorway and see a handfull of traffic patrol cars but how many major streets do you need to walk down before you see a single foot policeman?

My hair technician

is similarly heavy footed and he's just been on a safe driving course which cost him £85 but a clean licence.
He said it was run by the Institute of Advanced Motorists who sound a bigger bunch of anoraks than we do.
Anyways with your copmputer skills I'm sure you could work from home and send they hologrammie thingies tae ony meeting ye wiz supposed tae attend

Re: At this rate I\'ll be banned by the end of November

Oh dear diddums, what a shame never mind.

You knew the road speed limit but still you choose to speed. So when you get caught you cry "foul". Where is the problem? Presumably you set out to flaunt the law so why get so upset when you're slapped down?

If you don't want the tickets and the insurance hike - then may I suggest you look at the big dial with numbers on it? Yes that's the one on the dashboard of your car, thoughtful chaps the designers aren't they...

Re: At this rate I\'ll be banned by the end of November

How can you say that with a clear conscience!! I recall many occasion when you made your 100 mile trip to the marina in little over an hour.

Shame on you

Re: At this rate I\'ll be banned by the end of November

Good point Kev, :) that's true, but I accepted the risk and had I been "acquired" I would have had the good grace to pay the fine without moaning. Fortunately I used you number plates and not mine....
