At this rate I\'ll be banned by the end of November

From a clean licence to 6 points in 3 weeks .. the speed camera on the A27 in Fareham clocked me at 39mph at 23:58 on a wednesday night .. bit mean I thought!

No, you misunderstand...

It isn't a "speed camera", it's a safety camera. You have my sympathy - I spent a year driving 40,000 miles with 9 points on my licence. It's no fun.

Re: At this rate I\'ll be banned by the end of November

Fraid Hampshire is rife with these bloody things, along with their mobile units (who got me at 40mph in a 30 dual carriageway at 0543!!!). Not being cynical (cos i never am!) but this might have something to do with Hampshire Plod getting revenue from fines?

I know of 5 new systems erected in the southampton/fareham area in the last 6 months, all forward facing digital systems. Great if you have a bike with no front plate tho.... now there's an idea!

Condolances matey, but I'm afraid this is just typical of the attack on motorists that is gaining momentum. I am trying to get a nice IT job in a company who have a waterside office so I can RIB to work!

The police have become uniformed tax collectors. They are not Safety Cameras, they are Revenue Cameras. You have my sympathy. The authorities had better be careful, they can only push us all so far.....

From zero to nine in three days

I didn't notice that the speed limit on the A4 to the west of Reading changed overnight from 50 to 40. There was no warning and the signs were changed overnight*. Then the scumbag Gestapo put an unmarked white camera van on the road .... Thames Valley Police proudly went on the News 6 weeks later saying that this particular van had collected over £300k in fines in the space of a month and as it was so successful they were going to buy another 2 .... My donation to their beer fund was £180.

It's another frigging stealth tax. But it's impact is the alienation of middle England against the police .... and that's (very sadly) now their problem. IMO, by their tactics, they've relegated themselves into a cesspit of their own making.

*Note: If new traffic lights are installed or a new roundabout or whatever is introduduced then by statute warning advisory signs have to be shown. BUT, if the speed limit on a road is changed then no advisory signs are allowed to be displayed. On this particular stretch of road 360 x 360 mm camera signs were installed and carefully hidden.

'Scumbag Gestapo'! - who you going to call when your home is burgled/daughter raped/children abused/boat vandalised?.
You appear to be a persistent offender, so why blame the law-enforcers. I have no love of these cameras but the only real defence against them is to keep your speed down. Anyway - whats this got to do with sailing?.

Don't hold your breath waiting for them. Someone gave my son's car a kicking recently. The local plod admitted there had been 180 complaints of criminal damage in the street in a year. When the lad asked what they intended to do about it they said nothing, they are too busy and suggested he move house! He can - he's a student. But what about the other 179 complainants?

John. I must say I find it hard to believe they said 'Nothing'. Perhaps, 'We'll do what we can'. Which may not be a lot. But its hardly the FAULT of the Police, if people turn to such excessive anti-social behaviour, that their resources are stretched over the limit. Snide remarks about speed fines going to 'beer money' will not help when a childs life is taken by a speeding motorist. And who has to break the awful news to the parents?. Eh!.
Oh - and by the way lets give Police Officers the respect most of them deserve and stop calling them 'Plod'.

JohnM,

Exactly the same response when i) our car was heavily vandalised and ii) our flat was broken into. We moved house in the end too...out of London. I can't imagine a boat would score any higher up plod's priorities than a car. Maybe the middle two would get some attention (although I hope I never have to find out) if the police aren't too busy with easy targets like mildly speeding cars. Not that any of this has anything to do with sailing, but as the thread's here...

\"Persistent offender\" ???

3 times in 3 consecutive days. It's the only time that I've been done over a whole clean driving span of 45 years.

Now let's answer your question item by item:

1) Burgled - Yes. 5 times. Police action: NILL.

2) Daughter raped: She's a Black Belt and gives no quarter;

3) Children abused: The same daughter when she was 13 and cycling home from school was attacked by a Pitt Bull Terrier and bitten to the extent that she was hospitalised. She retailiated and broke it's neck. Action by the Police: NILL. We the parents, were prosecuted by the dog owners. (The case eventually was thrown out.)

4) Boat vandalised: Washboards smashed; all electronics ripped out and removed; boat trashed; dinghy & outboard stolen ... Police action: NILL

5) What's this got to do with sailing? I didn't start this thread ... but it seems that we now have a next to useless police force that has found a better mousetrap for funding themselves and doing naff all.

Re: From zero to nine in three days

Rabbie,

Our car was kicked to pieces right under a surveillance camera. When we reported it the police said they'd send us a crime form, or whatever its called, for insurance purposes. When we suggested they might like to look at the surveillance tapes they told us that unless we could narrow down the time of the crime to a 30 minute window, they didn't have time. To my mind, that's the same as 'nothing'.

After our car was vandalised for the third time, I stopped reporting it as its such a waste of time, although I fell guilty that that may let the government under-report crime figures.

They did send someone round with some fingerprinting kit the next day when the flat was done over, but we never heard anything from them again, not even a follow up call to say sorry, we've not found anything. Again, to me that's nothing.

I agree that it's not the police's fault if they're over stretched and under resourced, but you can imagine why people are p*ssed off when there does seem to be resource available for stopping speeding cars...

I've been done twice for speeding, both times late at night on dual carriageways at about 10mph over the limit. I don't think that's reckless driving or likely to kill small children.

Another 3 points and I can\'t go sailing

Let's take the emotion out of this.

We now have a police force that is out of touch with the common herd. The various police force authorities who are underfunded have been given a nice easy soft touch way to generate income for themselves ... and which they are doing with a vengence.

The tragedy is that the common link between the general public and the police in terms of 'confidence' has now been lost.

My last 3 fines were: 44/45/44 mph in a newly created 40 mph zone (which had been 50 mph for the past n-factorial years) ... Photographic evidence [which is not available to you] .... Send £60 for each ....

With respect, Rabbie, George Orwell's "1984" is becoming reality.

Re: Did he know?

You assume he was aware that a speeding offence was being committed at the time.

I agree with your sentiment that we all have to become accustomed to driving more slowly but this does not justify the police using these semi-commercial contract mobile camera units. They are a disgrace to the uniformed police force and have been criticised by senior police officers.
