Hello All and Happy New Year !

I have just taken delivery of this 4 way keyed switch from ASAP supplies. It cost £48 including VAT. (I plan to use this to by pass the MDI on my Volvo Penta D1-30f).

Once I got hold of it I used the Lucas part number on the box to ‘Google it’.

It turns out that this exact item is widely available on the internet at around £20 including VAT.

I have used ASAP supplies occasionally in the past but am unlikely to use them in the future in view of their pricing policy !

Do others have similar experience with the prices at ASAP ?

I can't comment on ASAP but you can nearly always find things cheaper somewhere - then you start looking at shipping times, whether they actually have the item in stock, what the return policy is, whether they're scammers or credit card thieves...

Sometimes it's worth paying more to use a trusted one-stop shop 🤷‍♂️

Anyone can do the same for anything and find it cheaper else where. ASAP have done nothing wrong and why should they sell a product with no profit margin. If you want to get the lowest price do due diligence before you buy. Sometimes you loose more than you save!!.

I have 2 -60 amp push button switches on my D-30 One to excite the glows & one to start the engine. These are both momentary switches & I might ask why you need a keyed switch? I chose 2 because as the engine gets older (it is only 1 year old)I feel that it may be necessary to warm the glows first. My MD2020 did need 6-10 seconds on the glows to start.
Mine are mounted in the engine area & accessed by removing the engine panel so security is not an issue. Wiring is nice & short
My switches together cost about the same as your switch

The glow plugs warm automatically and I think you will find if they (rarely) need pre heat you cannot start the engine until they have done their job. This is one of the improvements in the D1 design over the 200X which did indeed need pre heating.

ASAP can be expensive for parts like this.

You can actually buy it for less than £10:

Ignition Key Switch (Lucas 128SA) - 35670
To be fair they do list that switch as a non-genuine part. The same website has the genuine Lucas 35670 switch for £25.51 ex VAT. I'm not suggesting that means that the non-Lucas one might be in any way inferior - just pointing it out. The genuine one would still be cheaper that the ASAP one of course.

Surely they do not start automatically if one is bye-passing the MD1 due to a fault. That is the point of the momentary switch in the first place.

I’ve found ASAP superb in the past and used them quite a few times. They’ve even been very good as problem solving a characterful engine issue by phone and getting the assorted bits in the post for next day delivery. Their solution worked a treat too! I’d not hesitate to recommend them.

The relentless drive for lowest possible price will only lead to the loss of this knowledge / service and we’ll all be much the poorer for it.

We have a trade account with them but it rarely gets used as their prices aren't competitive. The majority of the time you just want parts at a sensible price.

You can nearly always find a part cheaper but how long it takes to receive it is another matter.

I was looking for an item on ebay the other day and the cheapest was from China with over a months delivery.

Recently required a single 0-4000 Tacho. 85mm, only really needed one but wanted matched pair.
Genuine Yanmar was over £300 .00 + P&P.
A pair of KUS aftermarket units from a well known reliable UK dealer was £140.00, 4 day delivery.
Identical pair of KUS tachos from the far east on Ebay was £70.00.
No hurry and went for the Ebay jobs, they arrived literally a few days later.

They also list a Lucas 128sa at roughly the same price as ASAP.

What I like about places like ASAP is you can browse the place and get loads of diverse stuff in one shop. They are not likely to fob you off with dodgy patten or fake stuff and the normally catalogue stuff accurately. For example in the early days it was often possible to get lumbered with brass plumbing fittings from chandlers but ASAP had the correct tackle properly described.

Arleigh Group is the parent company for ASAP supplies and Arleigh, Nova Leisure, Midland Chandlers, and Aquafax,
There's also LKQ Leisure and Marine in the mix there somewhere, I've not looked at the full company structure.
They also appear to be a big supplier to the caravan/motorhome market.
When I've looked at this type of company structures in the past, but not specifically Arleigh, I've found that they have a serial string structure, which looks something like this:
Importer, the arm which imports and looks after import duty and compliance with UK standards.
A group holding company.
Then specialised sales companies.
And there can more intermediate companies, ie there's often a wholesale company in there somewhere.
Each one of these subentries, has running cost and has to make a profit, that all adds up to a big mark-up on the price manufacturer charges.
I've found that buying from an EU supplier is often cheaper, especially if the cost is below the import duty threshold, and they usually have stock.

Can you see if and when they took over Asap?
