I understand that the UKHO is withdrawing a number of charts for the Norwegian coast.

Does anyone know of a cheap supplier of digitised Norwegian charts and suitable software to run them?

Norways Statens Kartverk have a web site www.statkart.no which lists the following as distributers in the UK. They might be able to help you. I use Garmin bluechart up here as I don't believe so much changes and I always have the paper charts and the updates from EFS "Notices to Mariners" http://www.statkart.no/efs/index.html

...and of course I assume you know about Kartbuttiken

I'm sure that there are a bunch of BSB format charts floating about for free on the p2p networks, but of course downloading them would be illegal...

Many thanks.

Yes I have seen these charts. I have some paper charts for the area I will be cruising in but what I am not sure about is the electronic system needed to run the Norwegian charts, my system is SEAPRO 2000 and uses livecharts, BSB and ARCS charts.

I will contact Thomas Gunn in Aberdeen, they are my normal chart suppliers.

Can you give me any detail of the passage through Sunnalandstraummen? It looks interesting.

I'm not sure where that is... near Stavanger? Can you give me a position? There are a series of guides called "Den Norske Los" (The Norwegian Pilot) which describe the coast. They are available in English, or I can look at that passage for you and translate if you like.

I have the Norsk Los but they are currently on my boat (500 miles away)

Sunnalundstraummen is about 18 miles NW of Stavanger.

Many thanks.

I took a quick look in the 5th edition of DNL Volume 3 (2001) on my skipper course last night. There was a picture of Sunnalandsstraumen from the NW and it looked a bit tight!

Sunnalandsstraumen is a fine channel for smaller boats. The approaches are well marked, depth 0.7m at the stone filling and under the bridge, sailing height 2.9m.
