Arcona 340 in YM...

A great review.... I presonally would go for a Fingulf 33 after reading that.... and I am surprised they didnt mention that as a comparison...

I was looking forward to this review as I am impressed by the larger Arconas but I found it a bit of a disappointment though can't really fault it too much, I suppose I am relieved that it does not seem to stand comparison with the Finngulf 33. The new Finngulf 331 (not the 33 shown above) has some changes, she has lost some of the massive cockpit locker space to accommodate a fashionable walk through transom and you no longer get teak inside unless you are prepared to pay even more for it. Despite this the price has increased by a third since we bought ours in 2007.
As I am at the wrong end of my sixties I am amused at the 'young mans boat' references above. I am trying to work out what I really should be sailing which we would be easier to handle than our Finngulf 33. The sail area and air draft are both greater than the Sigma38 we downsized from but the sail control systems compensate adequately for that. With a 1500mm. wheel you can steer from anywhere in the cockpit. The main downside is that the dog does not like it so much as he has to sleep on the floor of the main cabin on this boat,( he is banned from lying on cushions) we did not take him with us when we were viewing so his needs tended to be overlooked.
 
Good review in that,for a change, it made some major negative points. Sufficient in fact for me to knock it off any list I might be making. Nice to see a bit of objectivity.

arcona 340 looks like a very nice yacht .. but thinking about comparison with Sigma 38 ... whatever happened to decent pilot berths? they don't exist on new boats .. why? .. where do you sleep on a passage? as well as somewhere to sleep, pilot berths provide a great place to stuff all your gear ...

Something that has perplexed me for a while. I used to regularly crew a Sigma 38 and those pilot berths were brilliant. You could fill them with bags or people and while they were a snug fit they weren't uncomfortable. The J/109 has pilot berths but the shrouds are a bit awkwardly placed and they are flimsy. Modern boats, even cruiser racers, have ridiculous U shaped sofas that would look naff in World of Leather.

I agree about pilot berths and the snug old quarter berth like on the Sigma 33, When you were tucked in with the water swishing past the hull you felt just so secure and comfy.
The problem now is that so few boatbuilders are making boats for people who sail through the night, I can understand this, we rarely do it now.
The old N.I. offshore races used to always start at 19.00 on a Friday night and and if you wanted to win you had to get some of the crew into their bunks before midnight, if they slept on the rail they were useless as anything other than ballast by morning. I used to do the start plus about 2 hours and then go down, when I got up fresh and full of go at dawn as we rounded Ailsa Craig or the Isle Of Man I was good for at least 8 more hours at full concentration.
Now they don't start until Sat. morning and finish before dark so the bunks are only used when the crews come back from the pub.
 
I have seen the Fingulf 3 and I have to say that I would like to see a stronger rig. All the shrouds terminate on the same deck point ... I may be old fashioned but I can't help it.

Standard Selden 7/8 rig with MDS section mast and aft swept spreaders. Why would the chainplates pull out of this boat when they didn't on the Sigmas or any other more recent Selden rigged yacht, you need to look down below to see how they are put together.
Finnngulf 33 is not a new design, just relatively recent in the UK, Finngulf proudly claim that ALL the boats they have made are still sailing and they have been at it since the 1980s. They are a small enough company to monitor every boat they make and they do, I had a call about a month ago asking how I was getting on with the boat that I bought three years ago. A lot of companies would be frightened to ask even after one year!
