Are there any alternatives to the Aquadrive on the market, proper CV joints/ thrust bearing rather than flexible couplings? Got the price list today and couldn't believe what I was seeing.
There is an American equivalent but its name escapes me at the moment. Almost certainly the cost will be similar, there's a good deal of engineering in an Aquadrive.
Aquadrive prescribe rules that prevent these items from being sold across borders, however when I bought mine I was in the happy situation of being able to order either in UK, Netherlands or Spain. The Netherlands price was a good deal less than the other two, but if you had to come to collect it I guess this might negate the savings.
Incidentally, my Autoprop was also cheaper bought in The Netherlands.
I have just replaced my cv joint with an Aquadrive. Yes, it cost a lot, especially when it has to be customised for the existing fittings. However, it should last you for a very long time and is supposed to be maintenance free.
There is a US company called Python that also do these systems but I don't know if thy have any outlets in the UK - http://www.python-drive.com/.
Thanks for all the replies. Given that 500 notes is the best part of a new sail I suspect I will end up without an Aquadrive or equivelant and stick to good alignment. I'd rather sail than motor.
What were your reasons for looking at Aquadrives in the first place?
If alignment and watertightness are your main concerns, this is a cheaper and good alternative IMHO: www.technosystemes.com
Improves also smoothness, BTW.
I thought the major motivation for fitting an Aquadrive was that once fitted the engine could rest on very soft mounts i.e. noise reduction was the objective, not alignment labour saving?
The beauty of the aquadrive is that it does allow quite significant and deliberate misalignment to enable the engine to be mounted in a position that would normaly be impossible (ie upto about15 degrees off the line of the prop) No aquadrive no new engine in my case as room is tight.
