I have been offered a good deal on a service exchange 280leg along with an AQ170 engine which I can have delivered and fitted by next weekend. Will I be able to just take out the old 130 and fit the new 170, engine ?? the leg I know I will have to change the transom plate etc, that is a fairly straight forward task, I hope !! Also what is the AQ170 engine like regards power and "reliability"
your thoughts appreciated

Is that the AQ170 or AQ171??
The 171 was 168hp 2.5L 16 valve
Great when on song but any little thing and its down by about 40%. Drinks petrol when you lean on the throttles.
ring me about it

The good old striaght 6 cyl units!! You know what we do and we wont touch them.

I'd rather stick with the 130. The 170 is a complete dog. 'scuse me while I go and whimper in the corner for even reading 'bout one!

Re: Thanks guys

Oh its a 171, 16v twincam jobby. Not the best but if its a good one then regular servicing should keep it in check. If the cam belt goes while running say bye bye to the lump.

Can be juicy at high/full revs but then can't they all. Should go into the space that the 130 leaves without too much tubble. Front mounts will probably need looking at. Do you know the history of the lump? What did it come out of. Fair amount of power from small'ish package which will always have a down side. They rev readily and are eager little beasties. Keep the top end lube bar thingy clean though!

I totally agree, its the "Edsel" of the Volvo stable and its up against some pretty stiff competition!

Now your talking, well far better than the AQ170!!!!!!!!!!!!

AQ171, if its a good one, and it will need to be, this dohc unit is not so bad, as BarryH says you will need to look after the the cam belt wheels and tensioner etc etc..

Should fit well in place of the AQ130.

so apart from high fuel consumption - what is actually wrong with the 170 ??

and why wont you touch em - they look quite an easy engine to work on /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
