All sailing plans have been on hold for 18 months because of Long Covid. One plan was to relocate to Scotland. That's too big an undertaking for me at the moment so I'm wondering about the cost of delivery or transport. Just a rough idea would be useful.

Smaller 23ft 1.5 ton boat cost £1000 to move from Edinburgh to Inverness by road.

It will scale up from there, that was a day for the driver, so no overnight. You will be looking at multiple days of driver time, overnight costs (in cab or elsewhere) probably a bigger waggon than we had etc.

Just ask haluage companies at both ends for a quote.

I'm just doing the opposite direction fro Inverness. Due to happen on 3/4 September 2700 + the dreaded vat. If load both ways a good bit cheaper. Mite be worth giving my chap a call. Let me know

That's too soon for me. Do you know how that compares to delivery trip costs?

I got quotes for both sea delivery worked out very similar plus you have the unexpected weather/mechanical issues that may or may not happen. In my case it's a new boat to me so that came into account too

Much will depend on the hull/keel depth, cheaper if you can put it on a standard flat bed truck. I had a deep keel boat that needed a low loader to get the required air draft to get under cables etc. You will also need a cradle unless the driver is happy that it will be stable on twin keels.

We had Arpeggio, (Sweden 36, 11m LOA, 2.04m draught) trucked from Bangor (Wales) to Chichester Harbour for around £2100, by specialist yacht transport company. Think had a return load, as we were happy to wait.

I reckon less than or similar to me delivering myself, once you've factored in accommodation while preparing (she was out of water), food etc.

And arrived 2 days later, with no weather delays!

Where on the west coast - big difference between delivering to Inverkip and Oban.

When we were buying and considering English boats the difference between road and sea delivery was as much about whether the boat was going to be lifted in/out at each end and if the mast was already down etc. ie. If the mast is down and you plan to store ashore when it gets to Scotland probably cheaper by road, if it’s already afloat and staying afloat then sea might be cheaper.

If ferrying from the south coast the difference is minimal, an additional ~25nm. As you say the location and state of the boat is going to influence costs significantly.

Helpful answers, thanks all. As to condition, I'd been preparing the boat - Sadler 32 - for an Azores trip so it would be well up to the passage north.

Having lived in the north of Scotland and the Azores I would suggest that the Azores trip would be a lot better health wise. Around 10 C warmer all year round and no worries about winterising the boat against freezing temperatures.

Thanks for the suggestion but Long Covid means that days of sustained effort are out of the question.
