Anything unusual about...............

Well, well, now how could I have missed that?

The reason that we are required to hang a black ball up in the rigging or forward part of the boat when anchored is precisely because it's not always possible to see when or if a boat is at anchor. The same is true of boats on mooring buoys, on occasion.
I think this is not very constructive and it would be nice to be credited with a bit of commonsense. Some of us have anchored a couple thousand times or so.

From the point of view of the rules I am with Solitaire on this... moored is not at achor so Rule 30 does not apply.

However, if I felt that it was prudent to display a day shape/light then I would in spite of the rules. A good example of this are the big mooring bouys opposite the RORO ferry terminal at Millbay Dock, Plymouth. There are 3 or 4 (can't remember which) lying very near to the entrance of the ferry terminal. They are mainly for navy use but anyone can use them with permission from harbour control in the Long Room. Strictly speaking I would not need to display a shape/light when on one of them but it is right near the ferry turnaround area and also very close to the main fairway to the River Tamar and I sure as hell wouldn't be on one of those at night without a light regardless of what the rules say /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I think this is one where common sense should be applied liberally because I don't think that displaying the ball shape is likely to create a dangerous situation - only help to prevent one.

However, displaying shapes incorrectly in other situations could cause confusion and so care and caution should be used when departing from the strict application of the rules but IMO this is one situation that is just common sense.
