Brightlingsea Harbour are replacing the old wooden piles on the North pontoon with new steel ones.

Seems the old ones are free to a home... good or bad.
The only downside is they are greenarl ...

I got a lump once. Tried to chop off a bit and it took the edge off my saw very, very quick.
Not certain but faint recollection (so many of them are dim nowadays) that the dust is harmful - irritates lungs praps. But then so much hardwood we used to use is classified that way and to most it only applies for prolonged exposure

I had a few slabs of what was called Greenheart which came from the old Aldeburgh Lifeboat slip. I was warned that a splinter in the skin would go septic very quickly. Gave it away to boatyard eventually who were very grateful to use as standing for bilge keelers.

Hmm - Greenheart - when I worked for a sawmill company I tried to saw a greenheart log - managed about 6" into the log and then it just stopped with the teeth totally B******* - in the forest they are cut to size with an adze with the man standing on the log and swinging the adze between his legs barefoot of course...
