Not surprised you've heard mixed reviews as I can imagine his modus operandi is not everyone's cup of tea.
I'm lucky that I'm a retired Chartered Engineer so I can usually second guess what a surveyor is going to find. Where the specialists do score though is looking for specific problem areas they have picked up from previous experience.
I'm sure many of us would welcome an up-to-date review of the surveyor you eventually use.

I used Simon Allen for my last survey and would recommend him. I know every nut and bolt on my boat and he found all the defects i knew about. I have heard Ben Sutcliffe is good too, but i've never dealt with him.
