Can't say I'd heard of them or ever seen one in the UK but some models look very nice.
Anyone owned an ilver?

Not me personally, but a friend of mine did and I've been on her (a 26 Mizar) a number of time, albeit just on the lake.
Very solid and well built, and also a reasonably good performer.
The builder managed to build up a remarkably good reputation, also with bigger models, in a relatively short timeframe.
But after the by then 70yo founder Vergani (RIP) sold the company in the late 90s, sadly the yard went downhill and eventually closed.

High build quality, and gel coat (models 90 onwards) which if treated well still shines after thirty years.
In the 90s onward they moved into a more production style method.
Before this in the 80s Ilver along with Colombo was an alternative to the Riva runabouts, with a bit of Abbate thrown in them.
The Mirable if well maintained still sells well.
The 39 Mirable dominated the Italian 11/12 meter sport cruiser market in the nineties thanks to its huge cockpit and thee cabins two heads layout.
She was the same size as the Fairline Targa 38/39. Put them near each other and once you board the Ilver you would not believe you are on the same boat.
I sold a couple Mirables along with 37 Matisse, 39 Spada and Thesi models.
But all Ilver are good boats, even the ones after Vergani, designed by Guida (Piper (very ahead of its times like the rest), 47/50 Scuba, 55 Explorer, 58 Vista) who was also part owner with Jannetti of SL also reported to have a small share in the yard.
In 2001 to 05 Ilver's where build in the old Viareggio factory.

It's the Piper 33 I'm interested in - twin Yanmar 440s with two-speed ZF gearbox should be good for 50 knots?

The Piper 33 was one of Francesco Guida designed models. Interesting day gigolo boat design way ahead of its time.
Possibly good for fifty knots but Ilver where usually always more heavy then advertised, so unless it is in top tip condition, you might not arrive to fifty.
