Hi all,

I'm a fairly novice sailor and have just purchased a lovely 1979 Carter Ragtime (34ft Sloop), however my question is has / doe's anyone else know ANYTHING about this model of boat or can you direct my to any web pages etc, I have tried umpteen searches on the net re this boat without success and no matter whom I ask have never heard of it, the little I have been told ( by the previous owner ) is that it was a boat designed and built by Dick Carter and is of the Ragtime design ( which is not by the way a Carter 33)....so anyone any ideas...or am I to be the last surviving owner out there ? :)

Typical mid-70's Carter design. I'm guessing plenty of beam; maximum beam (BMAX as they say in IOR) about 75% of the way aft; narrow stern; aspect ratio (Luff/ Foot of mainsail) about 4. Mast quite far aft; massive headsails requiring seriously big winches (Lewmar 55's perhaps?) for a yacht that length.

There was one called "Petticache" racing round the Irish Sea in the early 90's. The only thing I know about her is that they fitted a roller genoa and flogged all her headsails and spinnakers to the Oceanis 350 I was racing at the time.

Like any IOR yacht of that period (but more so because Carter was pushing the design envelope) if you're cruising downwind under spinnaker with a non-racing crew and the wind starts to rise, get the spinnaker down extremely quickly and unroll the genoa or a smaller kite. That combination of hull-shape and spinnaker size can become extremely character-building rather rapidly. Even the Oceanis can perform a nice gunwhale to gunwhale roll under a big kite and her hull shape doesn't encourage that sort of behaviour.

No doubt similar design to the 30/33's which have a beautiful tumblehome, increasing stowage significantly. If so excellent boat to windward, but rolls like hell when the breeze is on the stern qtr. Also a good, strong and safe sea going design. Watch the forward bulkhead below the cabin sole. The 30/33's are prone to rot if the sump is not kept well drained. Otherwise low maintenance so enjoy her.

Ragtime,

I list below, a few bits about your boat from Dayton's :-

Builder: Windboats Marine, Wroxham

Designer: Dick Carter

General Spec : LOA 34' 10", LWL 25' 10", BEAM 11' 1", DRAFT 6'

Remarks:

Replacement for earlier 3/4tonner Carter 32 in Carter Offshore range.

Prototype 'Ragtime' was built in C-Flex, 'Ariadne' was cold moulded and the first two GRP production boats were 'Peppermint' and 'Heatwave'.

I am sure you will enjoy great sailing in her !

Regards,

Alec

Have you got my old boat? It was a Carter Ragtime, which went to N.I. "Apache of Mersea"

Also I am based in Burnham on Crouch and remember racing against Peppermint.

Let me know if it is

There were one or two at Blackpool and Fleetwood from memory perhaps Devastation was one and Sir Jasper may also have been one. Always did well in Tomatin/Scottish Week

I recently bought the original Carter 35 'Ragtime'. She now has a red hull. She is lying on a cradle in Pwllheli, north Wales and will be on the water next seasonafter I sort a few things out (new electrics etc). There's a picture of her on the Yachting World March 1992 issue (see half way down this page: http://www.histoiredeshalfs.com/Trois Quart/Carter.htm). Does anyone have a copy of this publication by any chance? I would love a scan to print, frame and put up in the galley.

That boat was in the Holyhead/Trinity Marine yard for some time, I used to know the owner. If it had been in the Marina it would no longer exist.

If you want to find out a bit more about Dick Carter, his designs and the early days of the IOR, then you can also search for stuff about Jim Hartvig Anderson, Bob Perry, Yves-Marie Tanton and Chuck Paine who were all young designers together in the Carter Office. A lot of the designs that are attributed to Carter (including Vendredi 13) were YMT designs.

The boat was indeed at Holyhead but was fortunately out of the water during the great storm. She was then put back in the harbour and has by now made her way to Pwllheli. We lifted her out a week ago.

From a bystanders point of view: What is with the 'Ragtime' tag please?

There are a number of lovely boats designed by Dick Carter, but is the Ragtime design a 'fully bumped' IOR special intended for the top flight racing of the day?

Would appreciate your thoughts and experience on this one. The IOR Quarter Tonners that had all the bumps still look good, even today. Is the Ragtime design a larger version please?

All I know is that this information was given to me when I bought the boat:

RAGTIME was once owned by Dick Carter which he successfully raced.A mould was subsequently taken from which this class was then built by Northshaw Marine GRP Construction. Throughout the 1980's RAGTIME was raced succesfully in the Irish sea and was a front cover feature of Yachting World in March 1992."

Having done some online searches it seems to be correct.

Here's a link to a page that contains the history of a lot of Carters:

I had a Carter 30, still a fast boat but the Ragtime is a lot sexier.

Build quality varies; my 30 was ( obviously ) an American design, built in Gdansk Poland with British equipment & Volvo saildrive.

I met the owner of the very similar carter 33 ( like a stretched 30, not racier ) - that had been built in Athens; one problem he had was the folding prop, unlike mine and most, had independent blades which didn't mesh together with cogs, so it was pot luck which blade came out, with a bit of luck he might get both...

Dick Carter recently published a book about his designs. I have just been given a copy for Christmas, but have not read it yet.
