Hi folks,

Recently purchased a small sports cruiser (Skibsplast 660) and have her moored at Sharpness Marina near Bristol.

Firstly, has anyone heard of Sharpness? And is there anyone in the neighbourhood (Portishead, Bristol, Penarth etc) who would like to share tips on good trips and safe navigation in the Bristol Channel?

I used to go down the Bristol Channel with my Birchwood 35s every summer en route to Swansea returning in the autumn to the River Severn. It is not a piece of water to be taken lightly. 10 meter tides at springs can be nasty.I would not put any one off using it but carefull planning is essential.Locking out at Sharpness is usualy done 1 hour before high so unless you have a fast boat it is best to wait at one of the dolphins just outside the lock. The navigation is done via trasit markers on the shore, although I have I have heard people have gone straight for the bridge on high water.I have heard the are more places to go now (Potishead and Watchet) There is a video around that gives usefull information on the trip, Best of luck and watch for the weather.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
In answer to Q.1 yes I have heard of it and even know where it is /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. I had a friend that used to work there a long time ago.
Re Q2 I think that most Bristol Channel boaters on here seem to "live" in the S.Wales marinas.
Enjoy yourself.

I'm from Bristol, and have some experience of powerboat cruising and some (very slight) knowledge of the Severn etc. Would be happy to chat, or as I am these days boatless, if you wanted a (moderately) experienced crewman for a day let me know!

Send me a PM if you want a chat sometime.

<hr width=100% size=1>Why can't we work 2 days a week and boat the other 5????
