I know yacht arrival times are a bit of a guess. But if you can book a berth with an estimated arrival date, that eases one concern during the passage.

I have to agree as we have a berth booked for 6 months in Puerto Mogan from end of September but we get here earlier than expected and they luckily managed to get us in (against the wall for now) even though I called them numerous times to you odate them on our progress.

The ARC lot aren't going to make it any easier.

The ARC is only 200 boats. Marina Lanzarote can hold well over 400 boats, not to mention all the other marinas throughout all the islands. So the ARC can't really put that much pressure on spaces. So far I've only seen two boats over this way that are doing it.

AFAIK Las Palmas is the place under pressure, likely because it's proximity to the biggest(?) airport on the islands.

Las Palmas Marina, has an exclusive contract, with the ARC, so, never mind, that other people, who are berthed at the marina, most of the year........ that counts for nothing !
As soon as September comes around, people are only allowed to pay, one month at a time.
Thus robbing them of the discount, they usually get, for paying 6 months in advance.
People are given little warning, by the marina staff, like a marinero banging on the boat, saying you have to go, today, or tomorrow !
There is apparently a new woman, in charge, who seems to be making lots of changes, to the daily running.
Also, since Las Palmas Marina, is supposedly a Public Marina, you cannot book a berth, in advance !
I found that out, last year !
I do not know, how that is supposed to work, with the ARC boats ?
However, everyone else, has to be tied to the arrival pontoons & go to the office, before being allocated a berth.
I can only assume, that at some cut off point, the ARC UK people, phone Las Palmas Marina & tell them how many berths they need, for this years ARC
Then the office here, tells the Marineros, which berths have to be emptied, to make room for the ARC arrivals.

Its not the number of berths in the Marinas Mike its the few numbers available for visitors thats the snag.

We have been in Puerto Mogan for just over a week and noticed it has got a lot busier and not much space left here.

Luckily we have moved from the temporary wall before all the charter and sailing school boats come in!

Just wondering if any ybw memberd are here in the canaries, as we have just arrived at Marina lanzarote and then moving to Puerto mogan in a few days to send the winter.

Dtd

Yeah we're in La Restinga at the moment on El Hierro. Also have an article coming out about our adventures in the canaries in November issue of Sailing Today. Personally I prefer El Hierro, La Palma and La Gomera hands down over the others.

Would like to spend some time in La Palma. From what I've been reading Gran Canaria, and Tenerife, don't seem the nicest places to visit by boat and anchor.

A few clips from a guide I was reading on Gran Canaria. Seems to rival some of my experiences in the Ionion.

"This oil slick came down on us during the night and washed to and fro for the following 48 hours. Although required, under international law, to clear up the mess, the port authorities did nothing. We are told that such spillages are not uncommon here."

"Most yachtsmen would consider this shore to be of no interest whatsoever. Having once been devoted to the growing of tomatoes, it is now an ugly brown landscape fringed with extraordinarily hideous holiday developments."

"Arguineguín is an uninspiring little hole. Most of the buildings look as if they were thrown up, piecemeal"

For inland adventures then Gran Canaria is excellent! The walking in the interior is truly fantastic as long. Almost devoid of tourists apart from the famous Roque Nublo, which is a little like Snowdon. It attracts 99% of the tourists, leaving the rest peaceful.

For anchoring then Alagranza, Graciosa, Masca Gorge (Teneriffe) and the south of La Gomera. Forget anchoring in El Hierro and La Palma. La Restinga in El Hierro really is awesome. The harbour is so clean they have rays, turtles and tropical fish. Long may that continue. The yard there is also excellent albeit rarely used. We have our boat in there right now.

Here's a video from a bike trip I did around Gran Canaria:

My biggest piece of advice for the Canaries is to avoid the main anchorages marked on the charts. Use, Navily, Google Earth and some common sense to anchor in the places where 95% of other boat don't. You'll find the marine life is much better and you're not disturbed by tourist boats and jet skis.

I've added a lot of the ones we found on Navily with some photos.
