We have recently bought an Orkney Day angler 21. It was moored in gorey harbour, east coast of jersey. We moved it half way round to st Helier (sout coast) but ran out of fuel, the previous owner tolf us that the amount in the tank was sufficient to get us there. We have a single Yamaha 85 hp engine, does anyone know the approximate fuel consumption? It was quite lightly loaded.
Also, any idea on a top speed? The engine is 10 years old. We can get about 22-23 knots out of it.

There's a rule of thumb you can use for fuel consumption that runs as follows:

Diesel four stroke: 5 imp gallons (23 litres) per hour for every 100hp
Petrol four stroke: 7 imp gallons (32 litres) per hour for every 100hp
Petrol two stroke: 9 imp gallons (41 litres) per hour for every 100hp

That's if the engine is developing full power (ie with wide open throttle and everything working properly).

Taking that rule of thumb and assuming you are talking about a Yamaha two-stroke, you are looking at something in the region of .85 x 9 = 7.7gal/hr worst case scenario, somewhere between half to two-thirds that at lower cruising speeds depending on how hard you push.

That should give you a starting point.

I havealso just brought a 21 day angler which has twin 60 mercury engines on the back. I have been suprised by the fuel and wonder what the savings would be at running the engines at various speeds. I have invested in bigger fuel tanks for now,
