Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any good stories about/by people who have given up work/commitments and sailed away. Either with a details round the world plan, or just seeing where they ended up. Something along the lines of Eric Hiscock's Around the World in Wanderer III, but perhaps a bit more contemporary.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Your title gives you one directly "Sell Up and Sail" Bill & Laurel Cooper..
Another one is "The Voyager's Handbook" Beth Leonard.. these are both good informative books.

Hope this is a good start for you :)

The earlier book by Beth Leonard was 'Following Seas'. More narrative than the handbook.

Another nice one is 'Travellers on a Trade Wind' by Marcia Pirie. Sold up to sail on an Endurance (35 I think).

Other than that you could have a look at the blogs sticky on the Liveaboard Forum. Lots of stuff there!

Sell up and sail away

"The missing centimetre" by Leon Shultz is a great book on selling up and sailing away by one who has done it recently.

They did not stay away forever (only a hear and a half) , but sold house, business and have never gone back to their home country. They still sasil most of the year.

The presentation of the realities is balanced, and the book is a good read.

Available on Amazon.

Just heard today that it will be ready in time for Christmas. Amazon will have it from the 9th of December and SWMBO will be signing copies at The London Boatshow.

Here's a link www.sailawaybook.com

Boatingdreams 1 covers the buying of our first boat, setting a mooring and finding out about sailing and boats, refurbishing and selling. Then buying another and moving aboard full time in Essex.

Boatingdreams 2 covers the setting up of electrics/electronics and sailing in the South east coasts Black waters and Rivers from Tollesbury to Ipswich, swapping a Trapper 500 for a Moody 33.

Boatingdreams 3 covers more of the above and heading North up the east coast to Shetland stopping in Inverness, having spent a month cruising the Caledonian canal.

Boatingdreams 4 covers the journey to Shetland, up the east coast over the Pentland Firth, The Merry Men of Hoy, Orkney, Fair Isle and Shetland.

Boatingdreams 5 covers the return from Shetland to Orkney via Fair Isle, then over the North of Scotland to Cape Wrath, and down the west coast to Stranraer and over to Ireland.

Our next trip out is May/June and we will be sailing down to the Bristol area, via Scotland, Isle of Man, Wales and Bristol (Boatingdreams 6), we are staying in Bristol for a wee refit, water tanks and electronics (radar) and some cosmetics. After that we hope to complete our circumnavigation by returning to Tollesbury (Boatingdreams 7) and publishing one complete book on our novice travels on a boat and how cheap it really is to liveaboard, travel and work around the UK.

I hope this helps .
Happy sailing......the journey continues..

Check Robinson Crusoe dude:D He was the first downshifter lol. Of course, he didn't do that on purpose, but he liked it after all :) "following seas" are good as well, i agree
