My steel-hulled motor cruiser will need 're-doing' this winter. The boat has already been lifted and washed off and the existing A/F seems to be in reasonable condition ie no excessive build up or flakey bits. Problem is I have no idea what make or type it is. Being Dutch, there is a good chance it is Sikkens but the local chandlery warns than even different A/Fs within the Sikkens range are incompatible and can only suggest I totally remove the present coating. This seems to be a bit OTT, and on a 15m hull, not a particularly attractive proposition.
So....is there some sort of barrier coat I could use that would then allow me to apply a couple of coats of (say) one of the International antifoulings?

Grateful for any advice.

Yes you can get a primer barrier coat from most manufactures. The International paint catalogue states the following:
"If you don't know the existing anti-foul you can apply Primocon directly then simply overcoat with the International Antifouling of your choice"

Jotun also have an excellent marine paint systems catalogue as well.

suggest you contact: International tele; 02380226722
or Jotun on http://www.jotun.co.uk/

both were very helpfull.

good luck

This may be an impertinent question but how can you not know what kind of anti-fouling you have? I'm guessing you've just bought the boat; could you ask the previous owner, or the yard that did the maintenance?

cheers,
david

Pardon? How could I not know........? Well, at least your guess was right - I bought the boat in May this year. I managed to contact the previous owner who could remember that he slipped the boat over-winter in 2000/2001 and re-antifouled it but couldn't remember what he used. You have a touchingly naive idea of what information it is possible to glean from previous owners when a boat is bought via a broker. My experience, based on many purchases, is that they just don't want to know.

We always used to use Metallic Pink Primer as a barrier coat on unknown antifouls.
Being a not necessarily marine product, you might find it cheaper than something from the antifouling manufacturer.
