Antifoul woes..

I had my boat lifted out and antifouled by a team based in my home port of Saint Jean, Cap Ferrat, on the 23rd October 2012. The idea of doing it then was we were going to move the boat to Palma in the New Year and enjoy a season there this year. As it required a long sea trip to get there, I thought it would be worth having a clean hull to help keep fuel costs down.

Due to various reasons, this proposed move never happened and so we're staying put in SJ but when a friend took my Windy 37 out last week, he reported she wouldn't go over 22knots due to the amount of growth on the hull and props.

The last time she had a proper run out was in November but having spent €2,691.55 getting her cleaned and antifouled in late October (plus new anodes), I'm pretty hacked off to discover it hasn't lasted six winter months. I'm trying to find out what type of antifoul was used but I haven't heard back yet..

Am I being unreasonable?

Then my life...that's a hell of a bill!

But then it was done on the Cote D'Azure, so it's never going to be cheap!

I'm going down to the boat this weekend and trying to find out in advance if we've had an unusually good winter for weed growth down there, or if they did a rubbish job. I know I'm going to have a battle on my hands, either way, so want plenty of ammo up my sleeve!

When you say anodes, are you including outdrive anodes? Which outdrives have you got?

Cheers

The reason I asked about the anodes on the legs is that they are quite an expensive item on their own, especially on the dpg legs where the props have to come off.

Last month I had my Targa 40 lifted, washed, blocked-off, antifouled and relaunched at De Stefano in Port Vauban (ie about 10 miles away from where you had your boat done) and my bill was €1072.27 which was €453 for one coat of antifoul (this included the outdrives) and the rest was lift/launch etc. I bought the anodes separately and they were changed as part of the leg service.

All the costs you've listed out look directionally ok to me. The antifoul charge is high because they've put two coats on (primer + antifoul); and they've charged you separately for the drives.

So from a cost point of view I think it's fine. Whether or not the antifoul is working correctly is a discussion you need to have with the yard. When my boat was lifted after a year in PV, the hull was virtually unmarked, no growth at all, just slime. However, the drives were completely barnacled up, the Trilux didn't do a very good job. The boat wouldn't get past the mid 20's, whereas with a clean bum she's getting toward 40 kts. So outdrive/prop fouling is key. Could it be that when you took it out in Nov you inadvertently cleaned the antifoul off the drives, and the barnacles have had five months to get established?

Cheers
Jimmy

Cheap but effective antifoul according to this thread http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?158763-Stoppani-Antifouling

Will be interesting what you had on the boat before and whether they removed it before applying Stoppani, or at least confirmed the new antifoul was the same/compatible with the primer and new antifoul paint being applied. Do you know what was applied prior to this year?

big labour bill then if it's only 125 euros for 4 litres

Some really useful replies, thank you.

The translation was interesting too, I hadn't spotted I'd paid for a base coat, followed by the antifoul top coat using Stoppani. I suspect it will be compatible with the previous antifoul treatment because the same yard did it last time But I can't confirm this until I'm down there this weekend.

I'll also check out the state of the outdrives, specifically, thanks Jimmy for the tip on that one.

Harry

They painted a barrier coat before the anti-foul was applied therefore shouldn't be compatibility issue. Bearing in mind the op stated the boat hadn't been used for six months or so and the anti-foul used is a soft eroding type. Lack of use may account for a build up of weed.

Still hell of a bill though, glad I can do my own!

Hello H,
I think we meet many years ago when along with John Barker et al " performance car" mag used to run treasure hunts arround France early 90's .Correct me if I,am wrong but I remember a Diablo( loan car) breaking down boarding on the ferry,on one trip?
Back to boats it will be the growth on the Legs and the props as Jimmy says
I scape mine almost every time we go ,even after 1 month the props need a clean.
On my boat with the legs up in " beach" I can reach down from the swim platform .
I also have a mini diving kit ( 25 min tank ) for a more extensive clean .
It's un likely to be the hull ,only slime that will come off at speed .
Your bill looks ok - DPG leg have 3 anodes ,one circular one behind the props ,one small triangular one on the I think steering linkage ,and one largish " bar" one at the bottom of the transome shield .
Over Easter ,with the help of a mate I did all the work myself on my boat 37 ft kad 300 DPG leg .
( except bellows service done by Arie d Boom) @ la Rague .
My trim tab anodes were € 27 a pair ,
I think that bills in the ball park if you want some one else to do it ,and don,t worry once the props are cleaned up , she will be back to normal speed .

Thinking about it, is St Jean at the far / wrong end of the riviera? Is it a bit of hike to get anywhere other then Monaco and Villefranche? bit like being stuck Poole I guess.

There's some truth in that but I really like Saint Jean because it's a sleepy little marina, with a real character of its own. Weirdly, rates are a fair bit lower than other marinas in the area and I like the fact our pontoon is so close to where all the shops/restaurants are.

We nearly always turn right when we leave the marina and head towards the regular bolt-holes off Cannes and beyond but it's great to occasionally turn left and blast along to San Remo, to enjoy a taste of Italy for a day, or if we're feeling really lazy, simply anchor off Cap Ferrat itself.

The other advantage is it's very quick to get to from Nice airport; 25mins by taxi, if you're feeling flush, or €2 on the bus, if you're feeling mean. Only downsides are facilities aren't great and if you're on the wrong berth, there can be a bit of damage in strong north-easterly winds (Mistral).

One of the prettiest drives is along the Moyenne Corniche, and the haute Corniche above Cap Ferrat, looking down on the coast towards the old mountain top village of Eze. Its the one the classic iconic 'must see' south of France experiences that hasn't been ruined by modern honky-tonk development along the rest of the coast.
