Afternoon again.... grey matter moment...sorry ..
Forgot to detail....the rudders especial on the Antares 8.8 were so tight with absorbed swelling, that rudders would not easily drop out at all. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. Whilst ashore informed boat yard personnel be on watch . As this operation can very easily displace vessel support, prop shores and wedges supporting boat ashore. Removed all rudder stock upper gear inside boat, the throughbolt ,pinch bolts etc ...carefully to keep keyway and tiny grub screws from steering arm....top bearing usually slips off easy inside boat...important to place large saftey block under rudder blade out side ...save sudden rudder drop out ...and toe injuries....(been there)
Under boat....'g' cramp two wooden timbers each side of rudder blade as close to Hull as can ' as don't want to risk deform in rudder stock alignment to blade....then if watchful eyes are on the boats shores and props...carefully manipulate the rudder downwards using port ,to starboard seesaw movement. Rudder slowly should start to work its way out ...keep an saftey eye on boat supports as some force is displaced with this type of manipulation....If any one suggest beat the rudder down from the top grp rudder tube side...don't.
I was ( illness retired / am a indentured qualified yatch and boat builder..... is the rudder is that tight that it won't drop untethered ..then beating it won't work....

If you are referring to the white top bearing that is removed from the inside of the boat then after removing the 4 screws I only had to break the bond of the sealant under the top-hat. The stock will not drop out/down if the skeg bearing is still in place. Once the bearing is out, there will be a lip seal inside the bearing. What is not obvious is how you get this lip seal out:- there is a plastic ring, made of the same material/colour as the rest of the bearing, that you leaver out. It will pop out and pop back in again after fitting a new seal. You have to look very closely to see the join between the ring and the bearing. The lip seal dimensions are:- 40x52x7 and must have a stainless steel garter spring. I paid just GBP4 from a local bearing shop.
