I have lived and travelled on a boat with one cat without too many problems, given that this was sailing around the Netherlands in mostly inshore waters with an animal that was used to the boat and used to living with us in a confined space. Even so, I would've hesitated to go offshore. Cats get sea-sick and frightened, just like humans do and they are not susceptible to kind words or reasoning. The thought of being banged up on a long, possibly stormy passage with five or more seasick, terrified moggies tearing up the inside of the boat and desperate to find a safe, non-moving space fills me with horror. If you are new to ocean passage-making you may not be aware of just how hard it can get if the weather turns against you. While most yachties get through this and some even develop a taste for it, you really aren't justified in inflicting this misery on your companion animals. Time to rethink the plan.
