Another ICC question

I'm not sure why that would be relevant to my interpretation. :confused:

Indeed, nothing wrong with your interpretation. But the fact that Robin is restricted to 10m for power* is VERY relevant to him since he went over to the Dark Side. Good job the septics have probably never heard of an ICC. :)

OOps, what a dumbo. I was reading another ICC thread and jumped to a wrong conclusion. I checked the online application for renewal form rather than my ICC itself which was filed safely away. Just dug out the cert itself and it has no restrictions listed for power or sail, so if anyone wants a superyacht moved I'm your man.:encouragement:

I took a septic boaters exam test and passed with distinction. I was actually not required to by virtue of age exemption but the test was cheap enough, multiple choice totally dumbed down but it got me another plastic picture ID card to wave about:biggrin-new::biggrin-new:

Is it really as bad as they say it is? Any practical element? How would you compare it to say Day Skipper theory?

no practical at all. All multiple choice questions where 3 out of 4 options are so dumb as to be laughable.. Google USA boater test online and take some of the proffered test yourself tests, no money needed unless you take it for real. It is aimed at first timers, usually in a runabout type situation. There are other tests one called the 6 pack allows for commercial work up to 6 passengers, like fishing charter, hence the name. Above that there are more grades by tonnage validity, also on line or practical and those passing get to be called 'captain' every checkout girl in our local West Marine superstore is a 'captain' it says so on their name badges.:eek: The broker and surveyor we used were both 100 ton rated captains.

It appears the mercans have invented their own additional sound signals to ColRegs, their own take on buoyage (no, not the IALA A vs B thing - never heard of a "Nun buoy") and I reckon you would be better off hosing down a boat AFTER is comes OUT of the water to rid it of foreign critters. But I learned not to make the same mistakes second time round. ;)

You are better than me, I have long since forgotten it but bought the book of rules to keep on board, in case. ( a requirement for USCG anyway)

I made labels up to say on the east coast ICW keep east of.'xxx' west of 'yyy' or south and north respectively if on the Gulf ICW. That and hoped to see both port and stbd marks so as to pass between. Oh and a cockpit plotter with a magenta line route superimposed to follow helps a bunch too. ;)

If all else fails join 'Towboat US' for a tow or a pull off the mud. I paid the subs and never once used them![/smug]

The level did seem pretty poor with an emphasis on minor regulations rather than stuff that matters for safe navigation.

What score do you need to take command of a destroyer in the Pacific fleet?

Not high it seems:disgust:. When you see them load multiple ice boxes full of cans of beer on board then take off singing as they leave the marina, it explains a lot..
 
It is clear from that link that "power" can be "restricted" (i.e. up to 10m only), but "sail" is not - you either have it or you don't.

There is a further anomaly in that if you get your ICC through direct assessment, even on a sailing boat, you do not have that restriction. So my couple of hours on a Sunday morning with our club examiner in my 26' Eventide "qualifies" me to skipper a boat such as a Sunseeker! Must borrow one sometime - there are plenty lined up alongside in Poole.

I'm surprised at that. I got >10m as my YM exam was on a 40 footer but I didn't realise you could get it on a sailing vessel with auxiliary <10m. Can I borrow the Sunseeker after you? I've always wanted to have a try.

THat is indeed how I earned my ICC back some 40 years ago in a sail boat in Poole, plus I was winning races, cruising farther afield than most members and held several club trophies for passage races and cruising.

Did I also mention buying the then Commodore and assessor several pints?.;)

Never even thought about a mobo over 19m until recently but our USA 'fast'trawler was one such beast at 15 m as was the preceding 13m sail boat and the next one, mobo will be 14m too.

I guess my ASA Basic Keelboat Course certificate from years ago doesn't get me a "Captain" title then? :)

I was surprised as well but checked with my cert.

I pass Sunseekers 3 or 4 times a week on my way to the club and get little pangs of envy which would probably go away first time I filled one up!

In my case it was a generous single malt while I was answering the questions on navigation and regs etc. However I think he was just pleased to have a reason for getting out of going to church with his wife.

My Eventide is better than most as it has a deep single keel and at the time decent sails. Very handy if you have experience and confidence.

Those were the days when experience counted more than just bits of paper! I WAS AT Lilliput SC in those days and a friend there built a very nice Eventide 26 but sadly it was the last ever to be lost off a Lilliput laid mooring in a storm and he and I watched it breakup on the sea wall by the lagoon, not that he could see much through the tears.:disgust:.
