Another boat being rolled

As the great Spike Milligan said when asked by his CO what the hell he was doing in the Officer's Mess: "Everyone has got to be somewhere, Sir"

Does look unwise though, sneaking out the shallow, back way in those conditions:

I wouldn't consider any route out of Santander, or indeed anywhere else as being 'wise' in those conditions.

I bow to your superior knowledge. I have always found Santander to be an easy entrance. My vessel once sustained damage in Biscay, losing several windows, yet entry didn't trouble me one bit. You have either got it or you haven't.

Mind you I was on the Brittany Ferry , which takes a bit of an edge of the anecdote.

They sure had a wild ride...up to the point of the end of the film...they didn’t flip over.....either luck or extraordinary seamanship....although they shouldn’t have been where they were

I would be interested in know which way they went to get out of the situation. The last we saw they turned around to face the rollers but I wonder if they actually went back the other way which seems less suicidal looking that the chart.

Pretty sure the engine remained running throughout and the nav lights remain on too. Was the oil picked up correctly from the sump throughout?

Anyone able to identify the class of yacht?

One thing is for sure, if that happened to me, I'd want the video of it!

Wow! That is an impressive video.

Are there warning systems in place that the bar / bay is dangerous that can be consulted? Or do leisure sailors have to make their own decision from weather, pilotage information tide data? Curious.

It’s obvious from the cliff top what the conditions are like, but would that be the same at sea level looking into the surf? I would have thought so. The main is reefed, hence must have expected stronger wind.

It just looks to me, from my armchair, that it was entirely predictable to be a shit show. I am not familiar with surf or bars but have experience of not entering harbours in big, onshore winds and diverting: Troon, Girvan, Portpatrick and Ardrossan, all of which I have avoided in robust conditions. I did chicken out of leaving Girvan in light winds but big swell, more a shallow water issue that being overwhelmed.

Glad everyone was okay.
