A couple of days ago I became the proud owner of "Charleston" A 1972 Fairey SuperSwordsman, or at least most of one anyway. Yesterday she started her epic trek from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Alderney. I hope to get my sweaty hands on her on the good old 4th of July. She was the 1973 boat show exibit for Fairey. In 1983 she was one of the support boats for Peter de Savary's "Victory 83" Americas Cup challenge. This will be her 5th Atlantic crossing, admittedly not on her own bottom. She is in need of several lorryloads of TLC but I hope to get her bottom wet in 2005. Once I've sussed out how to do it I'll set up a website to keep those interested up to date on her restoration. Wish me luck.

Bill.

P.S. She arrives in Southampton on 26th June and the truck is picking her up on 27th to take her to Portland for the ship to Alderney. I'm going to ride down to Portland with her. So if you see us, give us a wave.

Its great to hear the progress report I've followed this story closely since the previous owner posted it for sale on the FOC forum. Looking foward to the progress reports. Incidently has "JTJ" been sold yet?

No, "Just the Job" has not been sold. Father-in-law has just been doing some painting and stuff before putting her up for sale. He is going to put her up for £14,950 ono. Another reason for me to get my finger out and set up the website. I can then post pics of JTJ on there too.

Who are you shipping with? I've got a 40' racing (sail) boat to get back to Jersey next year - and I'm just starting to look at logistics..

Of couse. Quite reasonable too. Patrick organised the U.S.trucking, shrinkwrapping and transatlantic shipping for me. Wainwright bros doing customs clearance in Soton. Portland Plant Hire trucking to Portland and cranage. Hassle factor by H.M. Customs. It's been a nightmare organising everything but hopefully all worth it.

Thanks that could all be useful. At least I will only need to get to Southampton - I'll sail a regatta or two in UK before bringing her back to Jersey. I suspect I'll need an overnight trip to Cherbourg to clear out of UK for VAt reasons before going back to sail, mind you. Bit of a nonsense really - I had to do the same after a refit at Hamble years ago.

It's actually the customs bit I think I'm dreading more than the shipping - the builder seems cool about organising the US end, even he's in California, and the boat will race in Key West before being shipped from Ft Lauderdale.

I can't remember the name of the shipping company, but if you are doing some sailing in Florida before shipping it may be of interest. There is a fairly regular float on- float off service between Florida and either Southampton or Cherbourg. Could be worth your while looking into it. No use to me as the Swordsman has no paint on her topsides and non-functioning engines at present, but for anything seaworthy it seems the way to go. If I remember the name/ web address I'll PM you.
