When I replace my bow thruster anodes (or indeed any anode), does it need an electrical continuity to the prop it's bolted to?

Is that connection provided by the bolt or do I need to ensure the backing plate is electrically clean also?

Or does not of this matter as it's just proximity that's needed?

There must be good low resistance continuity between an anode and the item it is fitted to protect..

Anodes on props, bow thrusters, saildrives get their continuity through both the bolt and contact faces. Sensible to make sure the faces are clean and not contaminated before bolting on.

What material are your bow thruster prop(s) made of? A lot of them are composite and while they sound metallic and look like painted aluminium there won't be any continuity, just in case you go looking for it. In this case the anode(s) is only protecting the gearbox via the bolt.
