Andiamo - Let's Go!

If you are in any doubt at all about the crossing hire a skipper for peace of mind
Worth every penny

It's certainly worth considering. I think I'd be reasonably confident as the boat seems to be running well (and will have a minor service / inspection before the trip) and as long as we pick the best day weather wise shouldn't be too daunting. And at the end of the day we have all the safety kit that's required.

Incidentally another suggestion is c'an pastilla marina. Anyone have any thoughts on that for a winter stopover (certainly near the airport!)?

If you can get a berth there then go for it. Not sure about your 'winter stop over' thing though? Winters in the Baldricks are not that great, although there's still more going on than SCM. What's the summer plan?
To be honest, if you can get an annual rental berth in any of the Palma marinas for a reasonable fee then take it.

The two places that I think would suit us best (money and availability permitting) would be Santa Eulalia (Ibiza) and Alcudia. However if we spend the winter in Altea (I'm there for a recce night next week) then I wouldn't rule out staying there or Denia for next summer (which would give us the opportunity to hop over the Ibiza and explore the area around Denia (which I know if pretty limited). A bit depends on whether we can squeeze onto a 10m berth.

Blimey, "hop"? A 50Nm open sea passage?
My idea of a hopping over to a beautiful anchorage is when you can measure the distance in minutes, rather than hours.
Even when cruising at 8 knots or so...! :D

I'm told that the west side of Ibiza is the nicest to be on from a local cruising perspective (fab sunsets), not sure if this is true or not but if you want to be minutes away then you're stuck with San Antonio. The marina is actually OK (we had a mooch about it last year) but I'd describe San Antonio only as an OK town (even considering my youth and the ease at which you can avoid the crappy ("bar street" bits).

At least you can follow the ferries across if you're in Denia!

It is certainly true that there are some lovely anchorages on the west side of Ibiza but then there are some lovely anchorages on all sides of Ibiza, not to mention Formentera too. As ever you have to choose your anchorage with due regard to the wind direction, not just whether you can see the sun set:D

I thought I would brighten up this discussion with some pics.
The largest bay on the west side of Ibiza (not Formentera) is Cala Tarida.

This was Tarida last August.

And this was the sunset from the Cotton Club ashore:-

Another (nicer IMO) bay on the west coast is Cala d'Horte which overlooks the Vedra rock.
The restaurant on d'Horte is really top quality.

Looking on the charts, you wouldn't think that there was much on the west coast but in fact, the anchorages are very do-able.
Holding in d'Horte for us with out big Rocna wasn't a problem but whilst we were there, another similar sized Princess arrived with the stock ground tackle and they didn't manage to anchor,

Time for an update!

As per my other thread, the boat was antifouled a couple of weeks ago with International Micron 350. Hopefully it will last a couple of years. Will report back in a year or so.

We've also had a minor service (oil and filters) engines and legs. Thankfully they found very little wrong. The only items being...

1) Engine wouldn't start due to poor Sea-Fire connection. Weird, as it was working perfectly three days previously. Thanks to VolvoPauls's advice I know how to get it going if it happens again.
2) A section of fuel hose (the only one Col didn't replace last year) was cracked so that was replaced.
3) Coolant escaping (consensus here is that it's not an issue) and indeed they could find no leeks. Will continue to monitor (see separate thread).

All in all I was pretty pleased and it's validated the extensive engine work that we had done last year (by Colin Ryan).

Our partnership is working well and I get on really well with my co-owners.

However, the big news is that we're on the move! After extensive inquiries I was unable to get a suitable berth for the winter in Mallorca. Seems that 10m berths are in high demand. The only places that had availability were Alcudia (stupid price) and Cala D'Or (dead and wouldn't give us a price).

Consequently, we've ended up in Altea (Greenwich / Campomanes to be precise) and will be taking the boat down there in a couple of weeks time. I believe there are some local Calas and anchorages and we have Calpe and Moraria just up the coast and going south we have Valencia and the Mar Menor further afield. And of course Ibiza is only a two hour dash at 28kts. Some people might think it's a waste moving the boat for the winter but the area is lively all year (Benidorm is nearby :)) and the ease of access (an hour from Valencia) means that we might use the boat over the winter.

That's it for now.

So Pete, you're saying Andiamo is going down the coast. Love it!!

Enjoy Pete, Altea is a lovely spot. BTW you need to turn your chart the right way round, Valencia is north! (I suspect you meant Alicante!)

Santa Pola is worth a visit and the island Tarbeca, just off the coast.

Campomanes is very nice, and at the most sheltered end of the bay - although you might need to wear your best M&S shorts (and iron them too) its a bit posher than Benidorm. The trip down should be pretty easy, just pick a good settled weather window. Probably a bit far to do in one day. Valencia is interesting for a stop over and just over half way (ish).

K, my only worry is that it might be too posh for us (no English brekkie)! There are some restaurants behind the marina that I'm hoping will be reasonably priced and of course Altea is only a 10 min cab away (or heaven forbid we could take the boat)!

My Google Maps pilotage suggests that Valencia is exactly half way so we'll break it up into a 2 day trip (possibly 3 days if we stop at Las Fuentes).

Go to Calpe - lovely marina, but go just outside the marina and it's wall to wall english brekkie, with all the red tops to read.
Good hang-over cure though, quick blast on the boat followed by a healthy dose of lard, with a pint of larger obviously then a bounce back around the bay - whats not to like :-)

edit - I'm starting to feel queasy.

See you there!

Good luck with the move, it should be a nice run down with a few good places to stop.

The restaurant in Greenwich is very nice, I'm sure they'll sort you a breakfast !!
If you want somewhere really nice try here 10 mins in a cab http://puertoblanco.eu/main/en/home/

You must take a trip and spend a few days in Alicante, it a very nice city with some top restaurants. Were heading there for a few days in October.

If you venture further south and want any pre trip advice please feel free to ask.

Puerto Blanco is indeed a very nice restaurant.
it would be intersting for Pete, to find out if he can park the boat in that small fishermans port, "puerto Blanco"
for visiting the restaurant.

from the restaurant you look over that port

We'll be alright in there - http://www.puertoblanco.es/amarres.php.

Can you use the pool?

Entrance looks a bit scary though!

Oh god.

Why not just stay at home and go to skeggy
