We flew into Reus on Sunday afternoon. As this was to be a one way trip to St Carles we couldn’t hire a car so had to make other arrangement. A taxi for the whole trip was going to be €150 so we took a taxi to Salou, a train to L'Aldea and another taxi to SCM. Quite a nice railway journey with much of it hugging the coast. Anyhow, arrived in SCM in time for a bit of dinner and a few drinks in the bar. Spent Monday relaxing and stocking up with as much food and drink as we could carry from the supermarket. Met Hurricane and Timbad in the bar and discussed weather for the following day. Despite talk of storms in Mallorca all the forecast sites / apps showed settled conditions for the following few days.

Tuesday (leg 1)

Decided that the time and conditions were right to head for Valencia (SCM reception said they'd book us a space). Conditions OK, scattered clouds, <10kts of wind, a little lumpier than I'd have liked but we were able to plough on at 25kts in relative comfort. It was the first time I'd left a home marina to move to a new one and it was a strange but rather exciting feeling.

Bye bye Sant Carles!

We were soon out of the marina and within 40 mins or so we'd passed Peniscola which is the furthest point we'd taken the boat since being in SCM. Dodged a few pots but didn’t see any other pleasure boats.

Around 4 hours later we arrived at La Marina De Valencia. Tied up to the fuel berth and re-fuelled. Following that, we were led to our berth (€25) by the very helpful marineros in their RIB. If you've never been, the marina at Valencia is quite lively with lots of boaty stuff going on and a swish beach club and pool next to the marina. Unfortunately Hurricane's recommended restaurant was shut so we found a tapas place for some dinner and a couple of pints. Weather a bit crap so we had an early night.

Distance covered: 83.4 nautical miles / 96 statute miles
Fuel burned: c. 300 litres / 66 gallons

I'd have hung about for a day in Valencia but SWMBO wasn't too taken with the place so we decided to press on. Again, conditions were good and as the weather looked settled we decided to stop at Denia on route. A nice cruise in good weather saw us arrive at Marina De Denia a couple of hours later (followed in by the Ibiza jet ferry). We hadn’t made a booking so stopped on an empty looking quay and booked in for the night, again approx. €25. Check in process was incredibly tortuous having to provide passports for all crew, ships registration, insurance, loads of forms for submission to police and took the best part of an hour.

Another Andiamo!

Apart from the pool being shut, we were very taken with the marina. Immaculately clean, laundry, good showers, lots of bars and restaurants. Could easily have stayed there for a few days. Had a superb dinner and drinks at the Republic Lounge for €50 or so.

Distance covered: c. 40 nautical miles / 46 statute miles

Thursday (leg 3)

Decided to continue on to our new home port (Greenwich Marina). Fantastic sunny day with no wind and we hugged the very picturesque coastline passing Xabia, Moraira and Calpe before rounding the corner to head into Greenwich. Re-fuelled and checked in.

Moraira I think.

Met Paul Meeson (ex Fairline chap and boat fixer extraordinaire) who kindly showed us around and gave us a lift to the supermarket to stock up with provisions.

Distance covered: c. 23 nautical miles / 27 status miles
Fuel burned: 220 litres / 48 gallons (for legs 2 and 3)

Greenwich (aka Campomanes / Mascarat)

We really like the marina and think we've made a good choice. It was purpose build in the 70's and is a little marina village (think Port Solent) along the coast and down a hill from Altea. There's a smattering of cafes and restaurants, a few cool bars and beaches / bars to the North and South.

One of our new local bars!

Spotted two T34's on the way in and a couple of T38's in front of us.

Targa 34's

Targa 38’s

We've been allocated a berth on the main quay so there's a little gawking from passers-by but nowhere near as bad as it would be in other places. Shower block is truly atrocious but nearby!

We're on the left. Yacht club and bar a few boats away.

View towards Benidorm

Boat behaved very well with no issues to speak of. Even the plotter and autopilot worked. Whilst the conditions weren’t challenging it has really helped us to get to know the boat in cruising conditions and what our limits are (max 100 miles non-stop). Boat seems to be happiest cruising at 3000 revs giving around 26kts and around 1.5 status miles per gallon. We carry 592 litres of fuel (130 gallons) so have a theoretical range of 195 statute miles @ 26kts.

Return taxi from the marina to Alicante took 55 mins and cost €85.

All in all, we really enjoyed the trip and were glad that we were semi forced to make it (normally we’re a little too lazy and just potter about). We’re really excited with the prospect of cruising in a new are and will be sampling the north and south cost over the next couple of seasons.

Sounds like you had a great trip Pete, enjoy your new marina!

Going anywhere new is daunting but it sounds like it opens your cruising options for next year.

Is the 100 mile max you mention the limit of what you would like do (comfortably) in a day, as opposed to what the boat ‘could’ do?

It's not the boat, that would keep going until it ran out of fuel! As my wife just lies and reads a book I'm effectively single handing. I know the autopilot will steer the boat but I still need to watch out of hazards and being a shot arse the visibility from the helm seat isn't great.

Incidentally, what speed do you cruise at and what is your fuel burn like?

Sorry we missed you. 2 more alternatives for getting to Alicante airport, either ALSA bus from Benidorm, just under €10, or Beniconnect, about €15.

Alsa runs almost every hour, Beniconnect will construct a journey and time to suit you. Google them to get further details.

Thanks John, it was a shame we missed you too. Normally we'd rent a car but will check out your recommendations if we don't.

Incidentally, we took a cruise down to Benidorm and found the mooring that you recommended but it seemed to be choker with jet skis so we headed back to Playa Mascarat and anchored there for lunch (very nice it was too).

One thing I didn't get, the cruising guide show a few anchorages in the area and says "anchor in 3m". However that would be within the line of the yellow buoys (which I assume are a swimming / no go area for boats). Does that mean they are unusable?

What anchorages do you recommend to our East North?

Sorry Pete, I don’t know any anchorages heading North. And yes, the yellow buoys are the limits of the swimming areas, so,no good for anchoring. What cruising guide are you using? I’m interested because I didn’t know one existed! Unfortunately there are lots of jet skis around, your lovely pic shows a fair few based in Mascarat.

nice report thanks !

I've been once in that marina in Altea many years ago, and remember that I liked the place, well done !
The region has very good weather nearly all year long, better than any region we know in the med,
my mum was in Calpe 2 weeks ago, and it was mostly 30°C,
I'm now in south Sardegna, nice weather here aswell, but <<30°C
what was the airtemp out on the water ?

nice report thanks !

Thanks Bart, weather was very nice (24°C or so). We were in shorts all week and there were people sunbathing with little (or nothing) on :)! Temps put on the water were the same. I'm not sure how warm the sea was, very pleasant I imagine.

Actually, if you get a run of good weather, now is a lovely time for cruising. Winds are generally very light, it's not too hot, and the marinas / anchorages usually have spaces.

Well done, P.
Am I right in thinking that this is your first cruise report?
Anyway, looking fwd for more! :encouragement:

I think it is! Over the next couple of seasons we'll be covering...

1) Ibiza (53nm) and Formentera
2) The coast north of Altea (Calpe, Moraira, Xabia and Denia) - can be done in small trips
3) The coast south of Altea (Alicante, Santa Pola, Torrevieja)
4) The Mar Menor

Thanks, Pete. From a UK perspective, the idea of shorts in October** is a big plus and the pix look great.

**I don't actually own any shorts at all, which is perhaps a relief to anyone of a nervous disposition

Thanks for the report Pete and congratulations on your arrival. Hope the move works out

Sea temperature is between 23 - 25C, so still very pleasant, although it has been windy and raining over the past 3 days, so maybe a little cooler now.

You left at the right time Pete:)

Hi Pete, i have stumbled across this thread whilst googling “motor cruising in and around Altea”. Are you still berthed at Marina Greenwich ?

i was there in July taking a look around as a friend recommended it and a particular chap to look after our boat. It’s appears a lovely marina with a nice feel about the place and Rosa in the office was nice too although hasn’t confirmed me a berth yet.

Also, what is the cruising in the area like? Are there plenty of decent anchorages where you can while away your days in relative calm ?

interested for your feedback

Yep, we're still in Greenwich and love the place. The only downsides are the cost, you really need a car and the toilets are a bit primitive. And don't expect any wifi.

Pluses are some good restaurants, it's nice and peaceful out of season (everything stays open) and the marineros are super helpful.

The Med season where we are pretty much ends for the Spanish and Germans so I'm sure that Rosa will find you a berth then.

As for cruising grounds, they're pretty good. Lots of anchorages from Altea all the way up to Denia. There's also some lovely marinas to visit (Altea, Calpe, Moraira, Javea, Denia to the north and more to the south (Alicante and beyond).

It's also an easy transfer from Alicante by car (loads of cheap flights).

Who has been recommended to look after your boat? We use a Spanish Volvo guy for engines and an ex Fairline Brit for everything else.

Any questions, just ask!

Thanks,

I also looked at Moraira and Javea marina's too. Both nice but Greenwich seemed more in keeping with the feel and vibe of a place that I would like. Fingers crossed Rosa comes through.

Regards to care, it's Andrew Page who I was recommended to use and who I arranged to visit and see other boats in his custody as part of my due diligence on this. He looked after a Riva owned by a friends' acquaintance there, for a few years before it was sold only recently and moved hence me thinking there's an ideal space appeared for me but that didn't happen.

Appreciate the feedback and will certainly let you know if I get lucky.

I believe that Moraira and Javea both have Yacht Clubs that you need to join at £10k or so. Plus there are long waiting lists. Doesn't matter though as they usually have a spare berth on the day in off season when we tend to go (it's €40 a night or something like that).

Andy is a good chap and used to look after our boat but he's so snowed under that he asked if we use someone else. Don't worry though, if he can't help you then I can give you some recommendations. Unlike the Balearics, there are people around who won't rip you off.

I'm out in the middle of September so can speak to Rosa then if she's ignoring your emails!

Haha. Just heard that hopefully end of September I'll have a space. I'll keep pushing.

And tbh, in Mallorca I've been very happy with all of the services I have received (had much work done to my boat this last seven months), and from many different trades too. It's all top level and I think fairly priced too. But it's the monthly berthing fees, especially now with the high season uplift, that taking a longer term view of, is just too excessive for my wallet. Where you are the difference would enable me to buy a property too !
