And the challenge is......

If you are awake and free at 7am, go to the fish market. You can play "Guess how much of our fish is bought by the EU" in between seeing marvelous boxes of strange fishes. Bring white or blue wellies :)

Go for a walk round the docks and look for the famous direction sign painted on the wall.

And look at the splendid Dock Tower, built by an ancestor. Worth the climb to the top. And find the memorial plaque to the minesweeper crews of WW2 who worked from Grimsby, incl my father.

The Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre is a brilliant museum about the town and North Sea fishing and ships, and includes a guided tour of the Ross Tiger, a middle-water side trawler, built in 1956 by Cochranes Yard, Selby, Yorkshire of riveted steel.
She is fitted with Ruston and Hornsby machinery made in Lincoln, and Crompton Parkinson 110v DC dynamos supplying the ship, plus a 220v DC dynamo dedicated to the electric trawl winch.
The accomodation is below and aft, a new development which provided warmer and drier cabins for the crew than previous arrangements under the focs'l.
She was subsequently used as a rig standby vessel by Cam Shipping, before the Piper Alpha disater stopped old sidewinders from being used in that role.
The tour will be given by an ex trawlerman who can answer any questions.
The place is worth a trip to GY in its own right.

Have used Grimsby on delivery trips . Marina staff and sailing community helpful and nice people. Hull further up river is interesting.

Sorry all heritage based around fishing, Grimsby fishdock a fair way out of town still and very industrial and run down, catch a bus across to Hull or stopover at Hull further along the river though

+ 1 on visiting Hull as well. There is a trawler open to the public , and a museum with a fantastic collection of whaling gear, massive harpoons etc. Too bad you aren't interested in fishing:(
Also there is the replica of HMS Pickle, which brought the news of Nelson's death and victory at Trafalgar, back to England.

It's quite long way from Great Yarmouth! :D

That has to be a good thing! Trouble is I'm going from GY looking to stopover at grimsby to break the run and pick up fuel, SWMBO wants to stop a full day there but this thread is not convincing me.
My dog was once very ill in GY and as a result the house prices shot up due to the improvement.......

RIVETS. I'm a big fan of rivets. Number 2 son is a mech eng and I gave him rivet related presents throughout his course. Doesn't seem to have had any effect on industry at all.
