Re: \'New generation anchor?

I have been reading this thread with interest as I plan to buy a new anchor for my new boat which came with a CQR. I have been a Bruce convert, mostly after a couple of years long term sailing in the Pacific, but am open to new ideas. What size 'Spade' would I need to consider for a 60' ,28 ton vessel? I had thought that I would try and acquire another Bruce or possibly a 'Delta' until I read this.

Cheers

Re: whoops

No need to be sorry.

He's always impressed me by his explanations of what should and shouldn't work, and does try hard not to push the spade, though he's obviously proud of his work. He's made a few post around anchors which ask what you should be looking for in an anchor which obviously favour the spade, but it's good to hear from someone who's obviously put a great deal of thought into what makes a 'perfect' anchor

No such thing for most, and big boats will carry several, but intelligent conversation nonetheless

Re: whoops

Yes, I have to admit that I'm in a somewhat difficult situation, as the designer of the SPADE.. and that's why, in my profile, I clearely say that I'm the designer..
But I'm also a full time sailor and I'm pleased to share some of my experiences..
I always try to be as objective as I can.. and if sometime I'm not.. as you know that I'm the Spade inventor, you should be able to make your own opinion...
But I believe (perhaps I'm wrong) that I have quite a good knowledge about this matter...
Sometime I regret to be the designer.. because I have done extensive studies and tests about anchors.. and I know things about competive anchors that I can't tell..
That's why.. I never say this product is good or this product is just sh***.. but I always reproduce what magazines and tests say about my anchor or competition and if I have to say something, I always explain the physical reasons why..
I'm very pleased to have the chance to discuss with you on this forum but I'm fully open to any criticisme if sometime I'm not objective enough..

Dyslexia

My experience - watching a severely dyslexic friend learn French - is that it's no more difficult for him than it was for me. The problem is a) finding learning materials - not too bad if you're in the country and learning mostly by ear & tv - and b) once you've learned French you're still dyslexic, but now it's in French. This means that all the boring crap about making malapropisms and bizarre spellings persists in the other language. However, since all Englishmen make malapropisms and can't spell in French, no Frenchman immediately leaps to the conclusion you're stupid, which I am sure you have discovered, is what speakers of your own native language do if you misspell. By the way, out of interest, are you left handed?

Re: \'New generation anchor?

I normally use a Danforth around Florida and it holds very well in sand, but for our trip to the Abacos (Bahamas) last year I fitted a Delta because of the grassy bottom around the islands. Found it easy to set and holding was excellent. As someone stated above, the initial set is the most important step and I know so many boaters who don't yet appear to have grasped that or indeed how to do it.
