I am looking for an anchor which will fit into a hawse pipe of length 500mm approx. and weighs 12-15kgs.
I have considered the danforth type but the stock is too long for the weight required. Other types such as Bruce, Plough CQR and fishermans do not really suit hawse pipe use.
I have seen on big ships the type that I think that I need but they do not seem to be made small enough for my 35' boat. What type are these big ship anchors?
Where can I get a smaller big ship anchor either new or secondhand, preferably in the UK?
I would be grateful for any sensible suggestions

I think we have a terminology problem here.

A Danforth has a shank which you shackle the chain to and flukes that flop about at the other end of the shank.

Big ships have "stockless" anchors which work like a Danforth but are much heavier for their size.

What you need to look for is a small stockless anchor.

this came up a week or 2 back. i think the smallest stockless anchor was around 50kg.

that sort of set up might look 'superyachty' but if you want to stay put when at anchor, forget the hawse pipe and get a modern anchor (e.g. cqr, delta, spade, bruce)

Perhaps he wants to pretend to be mirabelle V. and drag his anchor - cause that is the only reason for going for one of the stockless anchors.

From my days in the merchant navy I seem to recall 'ships anchors' are called Bower Stockless Anchors, and are basically a mud weight.

I had a 20kg stockless i found on a boat i had on a lake. i used it to moor in the habour but it dident hold, i then anchord outside in a force 4 and it draged, then i put down a brittany and i stopped draging. I tried several times but i think under 50kgs or more they dont hold, so go for a danforth cqr they really do hold!
