the problem is that the natural angle of repose for chain is pretty steep (trans: it piles up easily) so you need to disrupt that tendency.

Previous suggestions on board the forum include:

an angled floor to the anchor locker so that chain slides down into the deepest corner first

a truncated traffic cone secured below the point of entry into the locker so that incoming chain is diverted from making a heap


On the previous boat, the anchor locker was a deep "V" shape, and never had any problem with the chain piling up. But all I had was 50ft of 6mm chain.

One solution is to use stainless steel chain. It does not pile up and forms a much lower heap. Only disadvantage of ss chain is cost! It is on my list of "wants" though.

SS iss more sslippery, sso it doessnt make ssuch a ssteep sslope
