Would it be useful for me to compile a list of all the recommendations for suppliers and workers that we share on here?

for eg, I'm just about to post another request for a recommendation on something and it occured to me that we often share this info. I could make a database with the service or product required, who the recommendations are and who recocommended them, along with a date. I don't intend to make it negative - only positive, genuine recommendations will go on it. It would be down to each individual to double check the the recommendation if they want to.

If you think this is a good idea, then let me know and I'll start work on it bit by bit. Perhaps we can ask Clive to host it alongside the Who's Who?

To start with I'd put Wilkinsons on for cockpit tents. Others will list Dolphin, etc.
I'll also put Paul at Haven Refrigeration
Furneaux Riddal for lighting supplies
SEMS for safety equipment servicing.
etc
etc.

I for one think that it is a good idea.

If you want something, say a sprayhood repair, it's better to start off with five recommendations than a blank sheet of paper.

There lies the problem IMHO - unless we have unanimous recommendations I feel there is very little point.

Others may disagree, in which case I will do my best to provide some input/feedback.

my feeling is that it will be good to have several recommendations - people can get quotes and make choices knowing that others have recommended them. Also, we are sufficiently wide-spread to need a mix of suppliers up and down the East Coast areas.

that's what I was thinkig. I can google them, or look at Yell - but you get 20 options and where to start? I think that we all trust each other a lot on the ECF so the recommendations here carry a lot of weight. Also, because many of us know each other in person and the boats concerned, then we can physically check out work too.

I get your point (covering the entire East Coast area - different suppliers).

Let me demonstrate my point by way of two examples:

- A well known shipyard on the Orwell - your experience and mine. I would venture to guess that your comments about that yard would be far less complementary than mine. Who are you going to believe?
- A Harwich based sail loft - I am very satisfied with the quality of their work and after sales care. Full Circle wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Who are you going to believe?

My idea for the list would be to only include the positive recommendations - after all, even if someone has had a negative experience, it doesn't mean the positive experience that someone else had is not valid.

I see your point and will think on a bit!

Dang, I am in agreement with Will again. This really is not good enough.

Besides, tradesmen enter and leaver the market, so a static list would/should not infer competence or satisfaction.

However, a list of potential suppliers would definitely helo, just have to work out for yourslef whther they are any good or not.

I would be happy to host the document.

As to recommendations, there could be a couple of columns with forum names of those recommending in one and those with issues in the other.
One could then ask the question about the issue by PM if you wanted to.

I think that's a great idea - it's a bit like trip advisor except you can contact for further information. It's a good way of holding our suppliers to account. Two columns, headed something like "Used with no issues" and "Used but with issues". You contact forumites for further information in either column. The East Coast has quite a few very small operators who could do with a bit more exposure and a few major operators who could do with their issues being known.

Hope y'all like the new single sticky, had visions of the ECF turning into a sticky playground so admin has kindly changed the name and amalgamated both former sticky's into one
Up to folks here if you want it that way, thought about asking them to drop the calendar but it seems some less vocal people use it quite a bit, so that works anyway :encouragement:

where is the who's who? I looked at it the other day but when I click there now I get taken the first message in the thread about the calendar?

:ambivalence:

Edited: ok, found it. BUt it doesn't really work for me as the message is now embedded in the calendar thread which means you have to scroll through all the other messages to find it and the links. Please can we have it back, or just have one locked thread with just the links in?

thanks! much better :)

No problem, also added the new ruling from Belgium and a quick link to jump to the start so people can now skip the chat and go for the content. Over to all to add other useful stuff, like maybe the OVA info ?
No suggestions from me regarding tradesmen as I tend to DIY it myself
