Is there a significant cost to the host country? It's not like you have to build an Olympic park to host an America's Cup. Surely the revenue from sponsors and rights makes up for any expenses. And the marketing oppo for the host nation is pretty big; post-Covid, it will even encourage visitors and tourism.
You'd think that the investment in the infrastructure already having been made, that it makes sense to get as much use out of it as possible, but I've read a few articles suggesting that Team New Zealand are exploring holding the event elsewhere. I can see that as a one-off that this year's event failed to bring in any tourist revenue, but then we have been living through extraordinary times.

OK, so reading around this a bit more, it seems that the tender process for overseas venues to bid to stage Team New Zealand's next defence of the trophy is a money grubbing scheme for Team New Zealand to maximise their revenues, even at the expense of Kiwi taxpayers who have invested in the existing infrastructure ? Or have I got that wrong ?
